Flora of Corsica
The strawberry tree
The strawberry tree is a tree of 5 to 15 meters high.
The bark is brownish grey at the base becomes
reddish in the upper part. Leaves with toothed edge
of a few inches in length are persistent ovals,
alternate, dark green shining above, pale green
below. They are rich in tannins. Greenish-white
flowers, in the form of white bells hang in clusters
and appear in September-October, at the same time
as the fruit. The red fruit Orange at maturity is a
fleshy, spherical, Berry skin rough, covered with
small conical points. However, it should not be
confused with Chinese Strawberry very similar but
has a kernel. It is an edible fruit, without very
pronounced taste, which is mature in the winter.
The Oxycedre Genevrier
Tree up to 14 meters, but whose dimensions
are usually much smaller (1 to 2 meters,
sometimes less). Bark grey or reddish, rather
rough. Evergreen in the form of needles.
These hot and fine point needles are
arranged in whorls of 3 on 6 rows. Their
underside is two white stripes, allowing to
distinguish with common Juniper (needles in
a single white band)
The Hellebore of Corsica
The Hellebore of Corsica is a caulescent
species, which grows in thickets on slopes
and in gullies. It is the largest of the
hellebores, which can in favorable conditions
to 1.5 m or more. Compound of three
toothed leaflets serrated, clear green leaves
are all cauline. The pale green flowers of 3-5
cm in diameter, whose sepals sometimes flip
at the end of flowering, are placed in large
terminal inflorescence. The plant typically
produces an abundance of seeds, even in
isolation.
The Laricio pine tree
This conifer has a trunk straight and slender,
reaching from very strong diameters up to
1.80 meters. A conical port in his young age,
he takes with age a tabular form. Its silvergrey bark comes in the form of large irregular
plates. Its ovoid cones are small, 4-8 cm. Its
fruiting, every two to three years, is good. Its
long needles, measuring 12 to 15 inches,
have a green ash and are soft, curly and not
spicy.
The Wild Mulberry
Mulberry trees are medium-sized trees or shrubs.
Leaves deciduous, alternate, are general shape
oval, rounded or cordate at the base, pointed at
the end opposite, and sometimes lobed more or
less deeply. The edge of the lamina is toothed.
The greenish flowers assembled in short spikes or
catkins, are either male (staminate) or female
(pistillate), but present on the same footing
(Monoecious plant). The fruit, or BlackBerry, is
composed, consisting of basic fruits which are
false berries formed of an achene surrounded by
a globose part deriving from the perianth.
