Looks of the Winterberry
Looks- berries
Deciduous holly loved for crimson red berries
Red berries are beautiful against winter landscape
Berries ripen in fall and are perfect in winter
Berries come in late summer or early fall
Looks- whole body
Kind of a shrub
kind of a VERY small tree
Kind of looks like just a berry bearing and flowering plant
Leaves and season
Alternate leaves on alternating sides of a branch of the
plants
In wintertime leaves edged with white
Greenish whitish flowers come in late spring
Seems to last all year round
Looks- main features
Height gets up to 8-10 feet tall (Rainscaping, 2012 [online])
Spreads about 8-10 feet if wanted (Rainscaping, 2012 [online])

Birds really attracted
Plant spread by bird droppings
That’s good cause winterberry is dying out
Berries loved by birds but especially loved by robins, bluebirds,
and hummingbirds
Good nesting for birds
Provides safe homes for birds in winter
Nectar loved by some small native bees
Leaves sometimes eaten by deer but only in winter as a last
resort for the deer to find food

Bark used for some medical things
Plant forms large colonies but to stop that just pull the unwanted
ones up
Must plant a couple together or otherwise berries might not grow
Just have to keep a “lazy” eye on it

Survives in LOTS of water

Tolerates wide range of conditions and soils
Likes sun but can grow in part shade
