The tundra in Manitoba, Canada
has two main seasons;
Summer and Winter.
Winter- In the winter, the
sun disappears below
the horizon and does not
rise for 64 days.
Summer- The Manitoba
tundra has mild
temperatures and 24 hours
of sunlight that lasts for 84
days.
Summer- The average temperature in the summer
is 43ºf. The temperature in the summer usually
doesn’t go above 50ºf.
Winter- The average temperature in the winter is 32ºf. During the period of no sunlight for 66
days, temperatures can get as cold as -94ºf.
The winds can blow from 30-60mph.
Winter- The Manitoba tundra
usually gets an average
precipitation of 6 inches a
month. (which is mostly snow)
Summer- In the summer
there is about 4 inches of
melting snow.
The Manitoba tundra is basically like a desert when it comes to
precipitation. There is just a little bit of snowfall but there is always
snow on the ground because of the permafrost.
The predominate plant life:
• low shrubs, sedges, reindeer mosses, liverworts,
and grasses
• 400 varieties of flowers
• crustose and foliose lichen
Arctic willow-grows close to the
ground and as shallow roots

Moss campion- found on
rocks and in open cold areas
Orange lichen- doesn’t need
soil to grow
PURPLE SAXIFRAGE grows in
rocky ground, one of 1st to
come up and the little tiny
hairs catch the heat
cushion plants- most plants are in
tundra, trap pockets of warm air to
protect themselves from cold
•Lemmings- new leaves,
grasses, roots, berries
•Caribou- moss, lichen, green
plants
•Birds- fruits, berries, plants
•Musk oxen- grass
•Arctic Hare- berries, grass,
Arctic willows
•Squirrels- berries, tundra
plants, seeds
• Ermine- lemmings
• Arctic Wolves- lemmings, birds, foxes,
ermine, caribou, musk oxen, and arctic
hare
• Arctic Fox- birds, arctic hare, squirrels,
berries, ermine, lemming
Polar Bears- They eat
wolves, and ringed seal.
