The worlds largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon
rainforest.
Rainforests only take up 2-3% of the earths land .
50% of the planets wildlife and plants grow and live in
the rainforest.
Only 2% of the sunlight actually hits the forest floor.
The air is hot and humid in most rainforests but is always
very damp and the soil is poor.
Rainforests are so important in the world because there
are so many trees and plants that absorb carbon dioxide
4
and release oxygen .
Tropical rainforests are
located near the equator.
There is very little
sunlight and a-lot of
rainfall in tropical
5
rainforests.
There are four layers in the
rainforest.
Monkeys, butterflies, bats and
eagles mostly live in the
emergent layer .
A-lot of animals live in the
canopy layer like birds, tree
frogs and snakes because there
is large amount of food there.
Not a-lot of sunshine gets down
to the understory layer so plants
have to grow larger to reach
sunlight. The animals that live
here are jaguars, most frogs and
leopards. There is a large amount
of insects there.
It is very dark down on the
forest floor and almost no plants
grow down there. Fungi grows on
the forest floor and ant eaters
6
live there.

The Tree kangaroo is in danger of being extinct
because its home and habitat is being destroyed.
Tree kangaroos eat leaves, insects and occasionally
small birds. They grow to up to 4 feet tall. Tree
kangaroos mostly live in the trees.
They can jump up to 60 meters from tree to tree
without getting hurt.
8
The golden lion Tamarin is one of the
most striking animals of the rainforest.
It has glossy orange gold fur and is quite
friendly . They eat mainly fruit and small
birds. The golden lion Tamarin spends
most of its time in the trees and rarely
come down.
9
There are six different types of Quetzal and they
are all endangered. Quetzals eat fruit, insects and
small frogs. They are very hard to find because
they live up very high in trees almost 3,600 feet
above the ground. A-lot of the time Quetzals are
trapped or killed because they are such beautiful
10
birds.
The poison dart frog mostly feeds
on spiders and other small insects.
Their life span is 10 years if in
captivity. They got their name
because some tribes use their
poison to poison their arrows.

There are over 2,000 different
types of Bromeliad in the
rainforest. The most common
type of Bromeliad is the fruit,
pineapple. They are most found
on rocks and tree trunks.
Bromeliad plants don’t use their
leaves for water, they use them
more for sunlight.
13
Epiphytes are plants that live on the surface
of other plants, especially the trunk and
branches of trees. They grow on trees to get
up to the sunlight in the canopy layer. Some
Epiphytes have berries which contain more
14
than 7,000 seeds.
The Parrot plant is a very rare plant in the
rainforest. The plant is usually a red yellow
colour but can sometimes be purple and blue
so it looks a bit like a parrot. Many people
said the Parrot plant wasn’t real until a man
called Ray Morgan wrote an article about it
15
in 2007.
The Curare is a vine with big heart shape leaves
. They grow in South America. The word Curare
come from and Indian word meaning poison.
Native tribes use the poison on their arrows to
kill animals. The poison is harmless unless it
enters the blood stream. In America they use
it in surgery to temporarily paralyze the
patient.

The Kayapo tribe mostly live on leaves, fish and
monkey. They live in thatched-roof huts. The roof
is made of palm leaves. Their huts are large and
they sleep on hammocks. There are no major
celebrations in the Kayapo tribe only when a boy
becomes a man or when a baby boy gets his name.
18
The Yanomami tribe are a very popular tribe in
the Amazon rainforest. They raise monkeys ,
parrots, cats and dogs as pets. If a person dies
they believe that they go to an ancestral village
which is free from disease, hunger and is free
from early morning attacks. Unfortunately 1,000
gold miners are coming to where the Yanomami
tribal areas and are bringing disease and they
are polluting the rivers with mercury.

I really enjoyed doing my
rainforest project and
finding out about all the
different plants and
wildlife. I found the
tropical rainforests very
interesting.
