Linseed was extensively cultivated in ancient
Ethiopia and ancient Egypt
Linseed originated in the Mediterranean region
into India
Linseed oil used in Egypt to wrap mummies
Early in Egypt grew small home plots
Began to commercially processed starting
around 750
France, Belgium, Russia, and Egypt grow a lot
of the fiber linseed currently
Declined when cotton gin become populer






It’s a long day plant and cultivated in 34
countries of the world
It’s the one of the major Agro-industrial crop
Its seed contain 33 to 43% of oil drying type
and 24% protein
Its oil has high percentage of unsaturated fatty
acid
It is mainly used in paint and varnish
industrial
Its oil contains 75% Linolineic acid and 17%
Linoleic acid





In Pakistan linseed is growing on marginal and
sub-marginal lands under irrigated as well as
rained condition of Punjab and Sindh provinces
with 762 and 2929 ha (2012-13) respectively
In Punjab, it is cultivated mainly in district of
Faisalabad, Toba Take Singh, Gujarat, Mundi BahUd-Din, Sargodha, Narowal, Sahiwal, Layyah,
Bahawalpur , and Bahawalnager
Whereas in Sindh it is grown in Jacobabad,
Shikarpur, Larkana, and Dado district
In KPK D.I Khan, kohat, and karak
In Baluchistan Nasirabad, Jafarabad Dera Murad
Jamal






Cultivated plants grow to 1.2 m (3 ft 11 inch)
tall with slender stems
The leaves are glaucous green, slender
lanceolate 20 to 40 mm long and 3 mm broad
The flower are pure pale blue 5 to 25 mm in
diameter with 5 petals
The fruit is round-dry capsule 5 to 9 mm in
diameter containing several glossy brown
seeds shaped like apple pip 4 to 7 mm long
Linseed crop love to grow
in temperate and sub
temperate zone




Pure fertile soil is required for linseed with 1 to
1.5 organic matter in the soil
Soil should be free of weeds
Land should be well prepared with 3
ploughing and 2 planking
Land should be well leveled for the equally
distribution of fertilizer and water


Harvesting is done when moisture contant

2000 kg per ha ( 15 to 20 Munds/ acre )
But its national average yield during 2012-13
was 710kg / ha






