I am proud of being Canarian The symbol of the Canbary Islands “El Canario” One of the most popular birds in El Hierro, La Palma, Gomera, Tenerife y Gran Canaria and which also is found in Madeiras and the Azores. Their colours can be green, brown or yellow. Plant Symbol of the Canary Islands La Palmera canaria Due to its beauty it is one of the most known plants. It can reach up to 15 metres. Its strong leaves are always green and with a touch of yellow, it can be found all around the islands. Animal symbol of Lanzarote. “El Cangrejo ciego’’ A typical specie from Lanzarote, it lives in a sea lagoon found in los Jameos del agua ( a cave), the only place where it can be found. It is white and blind. Plant symbol of Lanzarote. ‘’La Tabaiba Dulce’’ Its a bush with a brown and grey trunk. It can be found in the lower areas from sea level to up to 400 metres. In spring its green colour stands out from the dark volcanic floor on Lanzarote. Animal Symbol from Fuerteventura La hubara o abutarda Lives in the wide desertic areas of Fuerteventura y Lanzarote, though it is not typically Canarian. A fast bird that eats little insects, plants and seeds. Makes its nests on the ground laying 2 to 3 eggs. Plant Symbol of Fuerteventura “El Cardón de Jandía” It is a cactus type bush than can reach up to 80 centimetres tall. It can be found in Jandía in the south of Fuerteventura. Quite popular as ornamental and at serious risk, so protection is necessary. Animal Symbol of Gran Canaria El perro de presa canario Strong powerful animal about to dissapear around the 50s but which has been bred lately. Noble and loving animal, excellent for families and as a guardian dog. Plant symbol of Gran Canaria El Cardón Typical cactus bush found in the lower dry areas Animal Symbol from Tenerife “El Pinzón Azul” Typical bird found in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The male has different shades of blue, while the females are greyish brown. They live in the pine forests and eat their seeds. They lay 2 eggs. Typical symbol fromTenerife “El drago” Its a beautiful magnificent tree that grows in higher areas. Its fruit is orange colour with a nice taste. Its sap is red and it is said to have a medicinal use. Animal Symbol from La Palma La Graja-Chova Piquiroja: Black bird with red beak and legs. They live in the pine forests and make their nests in the ravines. They eat little animals and fruit. Plant symbol fromLa Palma El Pino Canario It can reach up to 30 metres high. Its leaves are always shiny green and with the shape of needles. Its main characteristic is that if burnt it grows again. Animal symbol from La Gomera La Paloma Rabiche Canarian Specie. Lives in the laurisilva forests. Greyish blue colour which can also have green metalic neck. At the end of its tail it is white. It mainly eats fruit. Animal symbol from El Hierro “El Lagarto Gigante” A big lizard in grey and yellow. It used to be found in all the islands but nowadays it can only be found in El Hierro. They are mainly vegetarian and just eat fruit, plants, flowers or insects. Plant symbol from El Hierro “La sabina” Its a small tree with a very strange shape, found in very windy areas. Its truck has a pleasant herb like smell with small green leaves.
