Kudzu
Nutria
Northern Snakehead
Mile a Minute
Gypsy Moth
House Sparrow
Sea Lamprey
Tatarian Honeysuckle
• Origin- Europe and Asia
• This arrived to New York because it was used for ornaments
• Effects ecosystem because it releases toxic chemicals that prevent other
species from growing
• Professionals dig up the plants to prevent more from growing
Giant Hogweed
• The Giant Hogweed came from Europe and Asia
• Was brought to the US as a showpiece in gardens
• This plant reduces the amount of living space for native species
• The government is having people cut the roots and flower tops off and
covering this plant so it will not grow back
Kudzu
• Originally found in Japan
• Came during the Great Depression, planted by the CCC
• Kudzu covers stems and leaves that causes the plants under to die from lack
of sunlight
• To get rid of these plants they want us to cut the vines and dig up roots
Nutria
• Originated from South America
• During World War II the Nutria escaped into marshes
• The species is overpopulated because of no natural predators
• Vegetation control such as lowering water levels and decreasing food
Northern Snakehead
• From native parts of Africa and Asia
• Scientist believe that they were caught in a fishing net and traded into the
United States
• The Snakeheads effect on the economy is the death of many native fish and
the disruption of commercial fishing
• To help stop these animals from causing anymore harm people are told to
report if any are caught kill and freeze it immediately
Mile a Minute
• Native to India and East Asia
• The Mile a Minute seed was mixed in with the Holly seed brought and
planted in NY
• Much like the Kudzu plant the Mile a Minute covers other plants blocking
out their sunlight
• To help control these plants people are supposed to spray the plant with a
herbicide such as glyphosate
Gypsy Moth
• Native to Europe
• The Gypsy Moth was thought to be the caterpillar of a silk worm and traded
into the United States
• It hurts the economy by damaging tree considering it consumes a mass
amount of leaves a day
• To help control the moth naturally with its predator however you can also
buy caterpillar traps to put around your trees
House Sparrow
• Native to Great Britian
• Brought over to the America in 1851 for their music they are also known as
the “song bird”
• The House Sparrow however destroys many wheat and grain fields a year
• To control the House Sparrow the government has started killing their eggs
and destroying their homes
Sea Lamprey
• Native to the Alantic Ocean
• The Sea Lamprey were brought into the New York by fishes being brought
up into the ports and into the rivers
• Sea Lampreys are greatly hurting the Great Lakes ecosystem by killing off
many important fish such as the bass and the trout
• Many lakes and major water ways are sprayed to killing everything just to
get rid of the sea lamprey
Invasive Species Nationwide
• Red-Eared Slider
• Asian Tiger Mosquito
• Olive Fruit Fly
• European Starling
• California Red Scale
Red-Eared Slider
• Originated from Eastern Mexico found mainly in California
• The Red-Eared Slider is thought to have just migrated north into the U.S
• This turtle is aggressive and bold it also competes with many native turtles
for food
• To control the Red-Eared Slider population they are told to call the CDC and
they will remove and relocate the turtle
Asian Tiger Mosquito
• Originated from Asia
• This mosquito was transported to the United States by a boat that carried
tires from Asia
• They cause an irritating rash on anything that is bitten and can sometimes
turn into swelling in which you should see a doctor
• Harmful pesticides work on this pest most recommended is RAID
Olive Fruit Fly
• From Sub- Saharan Africa
• Olive Fruit Fly migrated North to escape food completion
• They feed on the inside of fruits and destroys the pulp killing the fruit
• To prevent them they import natural enemies from other countries
European Starling
• Originated from Europe
• Came by nesting in boat crates
• Known to have brought diseases to livestock
• To prevent these birds from nesting cover and remove nest and close off
some holes
California Red Scale
• From South-East Asia
• Lava was found on an imported food
• These suck out tissue of twigs, leave and fruit
• Managed by natural enemies
