Competition in Plant and Animals
L.O: To understand what plants and
animals compete for.
• What factors do animals compete for?
• What factors do plants compete for?
• Explain the outcomes of limited resource
availability
What is competition?
Competition is one of the factors that affects population sizes.
What type of organisms compete for resources?
Competition occurs between different species…
What is competition?
Members of the same species also compete for resources.
Why do living things need to compete and what do they
compete for?
What do animals compete for?
What four things do
animals in the same
species or animals of
different species have
to compete for?
food
water
/ territory
mates
Competition losers
If species compete
eventually one species
will better the other.
Competition results in
winners and losers.
When competing for food,
if an animal is adapted to
feed on several things it
is more likely to survive.
In some species e.g. deer and lions,
males fight for mates
What three things might happen to the less competitive
species?
move to another area
adopt new survival strategies
become extinct in that area.
What do plants compete for?
Plants also have to compete
for resources. What four
things do plants in the same
species or plants of different
species compete for?
light
minerals
water
space
How do plants overcome
competition?
If a plant sheds its seeds and they land nearby
the parent plant will be in direct competition
to its seedlings.
Why is a parent plant likely to win this
competition?
How do plants overcome
competition?
• SEED DISPERSAL – Match the seed to its
method
Sycamore
Fruit
Burr
Wind
Apple
Explosion
Gorse
Sticky
Can you name another plant using these dispersal
methods?
Other adaptations
• Plants in woodlands flower early when the
trees are using few resources. E.g.
snowdrops and bluebells
• Some plants have different types of roots
e.g. very shallow getting surface nutrients
• Larger leaves
