Remove all the lower foliage which will be
below the level of the water

• Cut the stems at an angle and remove lower
leaves as usual.
• Turn the stems upside down, and fill the hollow
stem with tepid water. Plug the stem with cotton
wool (acts as a wick)
Soft stems
• Freesia, Hellebore, Anemone
 Remove all the lower foliage which will be below
the level of the water.
 Place the stems in a bucket (with flower food)
 Deep water should be used so that the flowers
are immersed up to their necks. After a good
overnight drink, the flowers can then be
arranged.
 Shallow water
Latex / bleeding stems
• Poppies, Euphorbias, Poinsettias, Ficus
Latex can be messy, and also can be an irritant
if it comes into contact with the skin.
 Cut the stems at an angle and remove lower
leaves as usual.
 Burn the ends of the stems (pass through a
flame a few seconds to seal.)
 Place them in a bucket (with food)

If the leaves touching water they lose the colour
(turn to green)

• Which flowers need to be conditioned?
The most expensive one first!!
Tropical flowers / Orchids/ Lilies etc
How to revive flaccid materials?
1. Re-cut the stem on a slant
2. Boiling water
e.g. Roses- place the ends of the stems in
boiling water for 1 min. Protect the heads from
the steam with paper then place them in tepid
water with food.
3. Wrapping with damp paper
e.g. Tulips

When conditioning
• Wear PPE (personal protective
equipment)
• Put cutting tools away correctly after use.
• Don’t leave wet leaves on the floor
• Clean the workbench and the floor
immediately after conditioned
• Dispose rubbish in the correct way
