Identifying Deciduous and
Evergreen Plants
• All trees or plants have distinguishing
characteristics used to identify them
– Deciduous trees lose their foliage at the end
of the growing season
– Evergreens keep their green
foliage year round
• Broad-leafs
• Narrow-leafs

• Manufacture and stores food
• Controls transpiration
• Blade: the expanded, flattened portion of a leaf
– Simple leaves have one, undivided blade
– Compound leaves have a divided blade

• Petiole: the stalk at the base of the leaf
• Stipules: secondary growth at the base of
the petiole
• Leaflet: single division of a compound leaf
• Rachis: central stem of a compound leaf
