Learning About Plants
Let’s explore the parts of a plant and
what four basic needs plant must have to stay alive!!!
Seeds
Seeds are like little packages.
They have everything they
need to make a new plant
inside.
Seeds come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
They can be fruit, cones, pods, and flower
heads.
Seeds
• Seeds can be big.
• Some seeds are
good to eat.
Popcorn
• Seeds can be
almost too small to
see.
Coffee
How do seeds travel?
• Seeds cannot move on their own.
• Some seeds are shaped like wings and twirl to the
ground.
• Some seeds are light and catch the breeze.
• Some seeds are inside heavy cones or pods and
scatter when they hit the ground.
• Some seeds stick to socks and fur and are moved
by people and animals.
From Seed to Plant
When seeds fall to the ground they are
planted into the soil. These seeds,
with plenty of love and hard work,
will grow into beautiful plants.
Plants have four basic parts.
Can you help me name the parts of a
plant?
•STEM
•LEAF
•FLOWER
•ROOTS
Roots
Roots have four jobs.
• Roots help keep the
plant in the ground.
• Roots soak up water
and nutrients in the
soil.
• Roots help hold up the
plant.
• Roots store food for
the plant to use.
Can you name a root vegetable?
• Carrots
• Radishes
• Turnips
• Beets
What do stems do?
• The stem is the part of the
plant that has leaves, buds,
and nodes.
• The stem pushes up into
the sunlight.
• Most stems grow up from
the ground.
• Stems are like straw. They
carry food, water, and
nutrients to the leaves.
• Sometimes food made in
the leaves gets sent
through the stem down to
the roots.
Can you name a stem
vegetable?
• Potatoes
The potato is the stem that carries
food to the “eyes” which are the
buds of the plant.
Plants have four basic needs.
Can anyone raise their hand
and help me name the four
needs that all plants must
have to grow?
