Spring Flowers
Chapter 1
Spring Flowers that
Grow from Bulbs
These are hyacinths.
They grow from bulbs.
Hyacinths have a very sweet
fragrance.
Hyacinths can be white, blue, and
shades of pink.
These are what hyacinth
bulbs look like.
These bulbs are being
“forced” to bloom.
The roots grow in the water.
These are tulips. Tulips grow from
bulbs.
They have many different shapes and
colors.
These are tulip bulbs.
Tulip bulbs are planted
in the fall to bloom in
the spring.
This flower is called a grape
hyacinth.
The colors range from white to
shades of blue.
The bulbs will multiply rapidly to
produce more flowers year after
year.
These are grape hyacinth bulbs.
They are very small bulbs.
If you look closely at the bulb on the
right, you will see bulblets forming
on the main bulb. This is how the
bulbs multiply.
Daffodil is the name of these bright,
early spring flowers.
The colors range from white to many
shades of yellow and orange.
The blooms can be quite small or very
large.
This is a daffodil bulb.
This bulb should produce two
flower stalks in the following spring
season.
These are bearded iris.
They come in many different color
combinations.
Iris grow from rhizomes.
Iris rhizomes look like this.
The rhizome should not be
planted in the soil too deeply.
Most varieties of iris will multiply
quickly.

Spring Flowers
That Grow
from Seed
These pretty flowers are called
pansies.
Some people call them monkey
faces!
Pansies like the cool weather. It
is best to plant them in the fall
to have masses of blooms the
following spring.
After the pansy blooms, a
seed pod forms. Once the
seed pod is ripe, it will open
like this and the seed will fall
out to produce more pansies.
These colorful flowers are called
primrose.
The flowers are usually two-toned,
having a different colored “eye” in
the center.
These are the seedpods of a
primrose.
The pod on the right is
beginning to open. Can you
see the seeds inside?

Spring
Flowering
Shrubs
This is a forsythia shrub.
One of the very first blooms of
the year, the forsythia marks the
beginning of spring.
The smaller picture shows a
close-up of the individual
flowers.
Rhododendrons are a favorite shrub.
They come in many different colors
from white, to shades of pink, purple,
and red.
The glossy leaves of the rhododendron
stay green all year.

Spring
Flowering
Trees
These are dogwood trees.
The blooms can be pink or
white.
Many areas of the country
have festivals when the
dogwoods bloom in the spring.
This is a favorite species for many.
The Bradford pear tree blooms
very early in the spring, and loses
its leaves very late in the fall.
Many people like to line their
driveways with these pretty trees.
Now that you’ve
learned about some
spring flowers, see how
many you can find in
your neighborhood!
