Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter
• Draws life-giving
fluids out of living
plants
• Spreads a variety of
diseases to crops and
ornamental plants
• Not native to
California
GWSS Feeding
• Sucks in water from
the host plant
• Excretes a white liquid
called “sharpshooter
rain”
• Drinks approximately
13 milliliters per day, or
200-300 times its body
weight (equivalent to an
adult human drinking
4,300 gallons of water
per day!)
“Sharpshooter Rain”
• If you see white stains
on your patio
furniture, plants, a
sidewalk or street, you
may have glassywinged sharpshooters
in the area.
Damage caused by GWSS
• GWSS spreads diseasecausing bacteria from
plant to plant when it
feeds
• Diseases include: Leaf
scorch of Almonds,
Oleander and other
plants, as well as
Pierce’s Disease in
grape vines, blackberry,
