Are warm blooded
Have hair or fur
Give birth to live young
Feed their babies with
mother’s milk
• Breathe through lungs
The monkey and the
rhino are both mammals.
Rhinoceros
The rhino is a large fast moving
mammal. He likes to eat plants. He can
use his horn to help him dig roots.
The rhino has thick skin to help
protect it from the hot sun in Africa.
Rhinoceros
The only animals that
can kill adult rhinos are
people. Poachers sell
the rhino’s horns. A
rhino moves fast to
stay away from people.
Rhinoceros
Rhinos have terrible eyesight, but they
are good at hearing and smelling.
They can hear things moving and their nose
helps them smell when something is wrong
so that they can run from danger.
Rhinoceros
Rhinos have hoofs that help it walk in the
dry desert. Their hoofs help them walk
in the water, too. White rhinoceros are
social animals and like to stay in a group.
Rhinoceros
The rhinoceros protects himself with his horn. If
a rhino’s horn gets broken off it will grow back.
The horn is made from a hair-like substance.
It grows throughout the rhino’s life, just like our fingernails.
The horn can grow from one to three inches each year.
Howler Monkey
The howler
monkey has
five-toed
grasping feet
to help him
hold onto
branches.
Howler Monkey
The howler monkey has hands
to help it climb trees to get food.
Howler Monkey
The howler monkey
is the loudest
monkey and the
loudest land animal.
The only animal that
is louder then the
howler monkey is the
blue whale. The
noise sends a clear
message to other
monkeys:
Howler Monkey
They can use their tail as an extra arm to grip
or even hang from branches. A gripping tail is
helpful to howler monkeys because they
rarely go down to the ground. They like to
stay in the tops of trees munching on the
leaves that make up most of their diet.
Howler Monkey
Howler monkeys have beards and
long, thick hair which may be
black, brown, or red. Their color
helps them blend into the trees.
The male is black and the female is brown.
• We hope you’ve learned a lot
about Rhinoceros and Howler
Monkeys. Look for them at a
zoo near your town.
