What is a forest?
• There is so much to see in a rain forest, from
birds flying though the canopy to fierce the
creatures lurking in the undergrowth.
• A rain forest is a place with a bunch of trees
and gets a lot of rain each year.
• It has a lot of plants and animals.
The Animals in Forests
• Sloths, Toucans, Jaguars, Iguanas, Tapirs,
Parrots, Monkeys, Vipers, and Vines.
• Sloths are very slow and lazy. They might be
the laziest in the world.
• They spend 20 hours a day sleeping in the tall
rainforest trees.
• Sloths have sharp claws to hold onto tree
limbs.
Toucan and Jaguars
• Toucans spend most of their time high in the
trees.
• They are easy to identify because their
enormous bills.
• Jaguars belong in the cat family.
• Most of these big cats have yellow coats
spotted with black rings, but some jaguars are
white.
Iguanas and Tapirs
• There are about 650 different kinds of
iguanas.
• Some are very small, but the big ones grow
more than 6 ft. (2 m.) long.
• Tapirs are unusual looking animals.
• It has a very large head, and almost no neck,
and its nose looks like a short trunk.
Parrots, Vipers, and Vines
• Parrots are noisy and bright colored birds and
have powerful beaks.
• They live in high branches in the rain forest
trees.
• A viper is a poisonous snake.
• Its fangs fold up inside its mouth.
• Lianas are one of the 1,000 kinds of vines in the rain
forest.
• Lianas are long and thick and almost as woody
as tree branches.
Location
• Rain forest are found near the equator. 57% of
tropical rain forest are found In Latin America.
One third of them are in Brazil. Other Tropical
Rain Forest are found in Southeast Asia and
The Pacific Islands. Temperate Rain Forest are
found in UK, Norway, Japan, New Zealand, and
Southern Australia.
