4 Types of Plants
Bryophytes
• Non-vascular (no xylem or phloem)
• Absorb nutrients and water
• seedless
• Mosses, liverworts, hornworts
Pterophyta
• 1st vascular plants
• Seedless
• Have stems, roots, leaves
Gymnosperms
• Have “naked” seeds
• Seeds are found in pine cones
• Evergreens, pine trees
Angiosperms
• Flowering plants
• Seeds enclosed in fruit
• Monocots and Dicots
• Flowers, grass, fruit trees
• vascular = plants that
have tissue that is
specialized to carry
nutrients and water.
• xylem= vascular tissue
that carries water upward
from the roots to every
part of the plant.
• phloem = vascular tissue
responsible for carrying
the plants nutrients and
glucose made during
photosynthesis.
Vertebrates (have a backbone)
Fish
• Ectotherms
• Gills
• Scales
• Hagfish
• Cartilaginous fish
• Bony fish
Vertebrates
Amphibians
• Gills when young
• Lungs as adults
• Ectothermic
• Mucus (slimy) covering
• Undergo metamorphosis
• Frogs; salamanders
Vertebrates
Reptiles
• Ectotherms
• Lungs
• Dry, scaly skin
• Leathery eggs
• Snakes; lizards; turtles
Vertebrates
Birds (Aves)
• Endotherms
• Hollow bones
• Feathers
• Hard shelled eggs
Vertebrates
Mammals
• Endotherms
• Live birth
• Hair or fur
• Mammary
glands (milk
glands)
• Humans,
dolphins, bear,
cow, cat, dog,
etc.
Invertebrates (do not have a
backbone)
Cnidarians
• Radial symmetry
• Budding
• 2 stages: Polyp and Medusa
• Jellyfish; Corals
Invertebrates
Porifera
• Sessile (don’t move)
• Filter feeders
• Sponges
Arthopoda
• Jointed legs
• Segmented bodies
• Exoskeletons
• Crustaceans (crabs, shrimp, lobster)
• Insects
• Arachnids (spiders, mites, ticks)
Annelids
• Segmented worms
• 1st true coelom (true body cavity)
• Earthworms, leeches
Echinoderms
• Spiny skin
• Water vascular system
• Tube feet
• Sea stars,
• sea urchins,
• sea cucumbers
