Can there be lightning without
rain?
Can there be lightning without
rain?
Wind moves from
High Pressure  Low Pressure

Cold Temperature
◦ Molecules closer together
◦ “packed tightly”
◦ More dense = more
pressure
Period 2

Warmer
Temperatures
◦ Molecules further apart
◦ “unpacked”
◦ Less Dense = Less Pressure
Molecules want to spread
out, yet… still same
amount!
Air movement (wind) is caused by the uneven heating of
the Earth's surface by the sun. Because the Earth's surface
is made of very different types of land and water, it absorbs
the sun's heat at different rates.
Sea Breeze
Radiation = the transfer of
energy though space by
electromagnetic waves.

Now… what's different
about the
temperatures?
When the sun is down, we
have cooler LAND and
warmer WATER.

How might a local wind help you find
the ocean?

Imagine you are near an ocean in the
daytime. You want to go to the beach
(ocean), but you don’t know what
direction you should go to get there.
Period 1&3
Valley breeze

During the day, the air over the mountain slope heats
up more than the air at the foot of the mountain. The
warm air over the slope reduces in density. A low
pressure is created at the top of the mountain and high
pressure from the cool air below forces a cool breeze
to move upward. This condition generates a breeze
which we call valley breeze, and it is very common
during warmer months when there is a lot of heating
from the sun.
Mountain breeze

In the night, it is a lot cooler as the sun goes to sleep. So the
air at the upper slope of the mountain cools off very quickly
and becomes dense. A high pressure is created. At this time,
the air at the valley floor is a lot warmer (low pressure) and
is forced to give way to colder air moving down the slope
towards the valley floor. This is called mountain breeze, and it
is a lot common in the colder months when there is less
warming from the sun.

Lab Safety Rules
Always follow directions of your teacher.
 Do not touch the hot water.
 Keep your distance
 Stay seated in front
 Horseplay will result in immediate
removal from the lab.

Question

Does warm air take up less room
than cool air?
Research
1.
As the temperature of air increases, its
volume expands and the air gets less
dense, and as a result—it rises.
2.
As the temperature of air decreases, its
volume contracts and the air gets more
dense, and as a result – sinks.
