Causes of Weather
Standards
7.E.1.2 Explain how the cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere and atmospheric
conditions relate to the weather patterns on earth.
7.E.1.3 Explain the relationship between the movement of air masses, high and low
pressure systems, and frontal boundaries to storms (including thunderstorms, hurricanes,
and tornadoes) and other weather conditions that may result.
Activator
Create a myth or a story about how weather forms.

Make a 5 Flap Foldable
►Take a blank piece of paper
►Look at the example of a 5 flap foldable
►Fold paper in half (lengthwise)
►Open it up and fold in the two sides to make doors
►Use scissors to cut doors
►Compare yours with the example given
Directions
Go ahead and get out your SISNs!!!!
We have a lot to do so be ready.
You need:
- A pencil
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Air mass
Definition: body of air with
same temperature, humidity,
and pressure
Example: continental, tropical,
maritime, polar
Picture/Visual:
Source Regions
Definition: The area over which air masses form.
Example: cT, cP, mT, mP
Picture/Visual:
Continental
Definition: Air masses that
form over land.
Maritime
Definition: Air masses that
form over water.
Polar
Definition: Air that forms in
polar, cold regions.
Tropical
Definition: Air that forms
in tropical, hot regions.
High pressure
Definition: whirling mass of cool,
dry air that generally brings fair
weather and light winds
Example: sunny skies or
High=Happy weather
Picture/Visual:
Low pressure
Definition: a whirling mass of
warm, moist air that generally
brings stormy weather with
strong winds
Example: Low pressure=loser
weather
Picture/Visual:
Front
Definition: the front of an air mass.
Example: cold front
Picture/Visual:
Cold front
Definition: boundary of an advancing mass of cold air, trailing edge of a low-pressure system
Example: cold air mass is replacing a warm air mass-temps decrease
Picture/Visual:
Warm front
Definition:
advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of a high-pressure system
Example: moving mass of warm air- often means rain is coming
Picture/Visual:
Stationary Front
Definition: Boundary between a warm air mass and a cold air mass that hit one
another.
Example: often means rain is coming
Picture/Visual:
Occluded Front
Definition:
Occurs when a warm front is located in the middle of two cold air masses.
Example: often means rain is coming
