Why is
predicting
weather
important?
Create a circle map with at least
10 reasons why it is important to
predict weather!
*
*Is there a difference???
*Climate- long-term average
of weather patterns in a
particular area.
*Weather- short-term
variations in atmospheric
conditions.

* Anemometer
Chapter 2 Section 4
Pages 60-63
*
* Barometer - measures air pressure
* Thermometer- measures temperature
* Anemometer – measures wind speed
* Weather balloons carry electronic
equipment that measure weather
conditions as high as 30km
* They measure temp, air pressure,
relative humidity, wind speed and
direction
* Psychrometer – measures humidity
* Radar – used to find location,
movement, and amount of precipitation
* Satellites track storms and measure
wind speeds, humidity, and
temperatures at different altitudes
*

2.
Highlight the definition of thermometer,
barometer and anemometer in your IN
(HW from yesterday).
What is the difference between a
thermometer, barometer and
anemometer?
Thermometer- An instrument that measures
and indicates temperature.
Barometer- An instrument that measures
atmospheric pressure.
Anemometer- An instrument that measures
wind speed.

* Solar radiation from the __________ heats the Earth’s surface.
Through _________________, the air touching the Earth’s
surface is heated. Hot air is _________ dense and rises. This
movement of air causes ________________ currents to form in
the atmosphere.
The movement and
collisions of these air
masses causes weather!!!
*
* Air Mass- A large volume of air that has the same characteristics,
like humidity, or temperature, as the area it was formed.
*Air masses are
always on the move!!
…. THINK Convection
Currents!
*
* Let’s do a little investigating in order to determine how air moves…
* Use your text book to define and label the following terms on the
globe provided.
* Polar Easterlies
* Westerlies
* Trade winds
* Doldrums
* Horse Latitudes
*
Polar Easterlies• A wind belt
formed as cold,
sinking air moves
from the poles
northward or
southward. These
winds produce
cold weather such
as snow in North
America.

1. What are the characteristics of the Polar
Easterlies?
A wind belt formed as cold, sinking air moves from
the poles northward or southward. These winds
produce cold weather such as snow in North
America.
2. What are the characteristics of the Westerlies?
A wind belt that flows North. It caries moist air
which produces rain and snow.
3. What are the characteristics of the Trade
Winds?
A wind belt that flows towards the equator. It
was used by traders to move goods from Europe
to America.

straight path due to the Earth’s rotation.

Weather!!!
*
* Cold Air Masses in North America come from the North.
* Warm Air Masses in North America come from the South.
The two air masses meet in
the middle and MIX to
create a front.

air
* As the warm air

* Steady RAIN which

*Describe what is
happening..

THUNDERSTORMS!
*Jet Stream
*Narrow belts of highspeed winds.
*Reach max of

storms
*Jet Stream
*
*Pressure Systems!!
*Sea Breeze
*Land Breeze
*Sea Breeze
* During the DAY, air over the ocean is cooler and forms an area
of high pressure.
* Air over land is warmer. As warm air rises it creates an area of
low pressure.
* The cool air flows to the land, producing a sea breeze.
*Land Breeze
* At NIGHT, air over the ocean is warmer. As the warm air rises,
it forms an area of low pressure.
* Air over land is cooler and forms an area of high pressure. The
cool air moves toward the ocean, producing a land breeze.

*Use the map provided and your notes to help you
uncover the answers!
*
1. What type of weather occurs at a warm front?
Warm fronts produce steady rain to a large area.
2. What type of weather occurs at a cold front?
Cold fronts produce hard rain and thunderstorms.

What does the word “severe”
mean to you??
Use the word “Severe” in 3
sentences

finished with the bell work!
*
*
*Tornadoes
* Happen in 1% of all
thunderstorms
* 75% happen in US
* Avg speeds of 120-180km/h
Formation:
1. Wind moving in two directions
causes a layer of air in the middle to
begin to spin like a roll of toilet
paper
2. Spinning column of air is turned
vertical by updrafts of air in the
cumulonimbus cloud
3. Spinning column of air moves to
the bottom of the cumulonimbus
cloud and forms a funnel cloud
4. Becomes tornado when touches
ground

1. What is the difference between a funnel cloud and a
tornado?
A funnel cloud is formed from a vertical column of air at
the bottom of a cumulonimbus cloud. Once the funnel
cloud has touched the ground it becomes a tornado.
2. What percentage of all tornadoes occur in the United
States?
75% of all tornadoes occur in the US.
3. How many tornadoes would you expect in a year
where there were 2000 thunderstorms?
20 = (2000 * 1/100)
*Thunderstorms
* Small intense weather
systems that produce
strong winds, heavy rain,
lightning and thunder.
* Warm and moist air near
Earth’s surface and an
unstable atmosphere is
required to create
thunderstorms.
*Lightning and Thunder
* Lightning – electric
discharge between
positively charged area and
negatively charged area
* Formed same way scuffing
your feet on carpet and
receive a shock
* Thunder – The sound caused
by rapid expansion of air
along the lightning strike.

*Hurricanes
*Large rotating tropical weather
system
*Speeds of wind 120km/h
*In Atlantic ocean = hurricanes
*In Pacific ocean = typhoons
*In Indian ocean = cyclones
*Most occur in tropical climates.
*Hurricane formation
* Begins as a group of
thunderstorms moving over
tropical ocean waters
* Winds traveling in two different
directions meet and cause storm
to spin.
* The Hurricane gets its energy
from the condensation of water
vapor and is fueled by warm
ocean water.
* Warm moist air rises, water
vapor condenses, and releases
large amounts of energy
* Continues to grow
* Dies when it moves into colder
waters or over land
*
* Hurricanes and twisters song:
http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=iOw6ONcKk4g
*
* Thunderstorm safety –
lightening is most dangerous
aspect
* Attracted to tall objects
* Stay away from trees
* In open, crouch down
* Stay away from bodies of
water
*
Tornado Safety:
* Watch – weather alert that lets
people know tornado may
happen
* Warning – weather alert that
lets people know that tornado
has been spotted
* Safety – find shelter (basement
or cellar is best) or windowless
room in center of building (
bathrooms, closets, or hallways
* If outside, lie down in large,
open field or a deep ditch
*
* Flood Safety:
* Also have watches and
warnings
* Flash flood is flood that rises
and falls very suddenly
* Find a high place to wait out
flood
* Avoid flood waters
*
* Hurricane Safety:
* Tv and radio give updates on
storm status
* If you live near shore, you
may be asked to evacuate
* Have a survival kit that
includes: water and food to
last several days
* Protect windows by covering
them with plywood
* STAY INDOORS!
*
*Severe Weather Projects are due Wednesday!
*Pick one to present.
*If you have an electronic version of a project it
needs to be email or brought in Thursday.
*Late projects will receive -1 points per day!
