How do tornados form?
• Thunderstorms from in warm, moist air eastmoving cold fronts. When these
thunderstorms from they may produce hail,
strong winds, and tornados.
Step by Step
• 1. A change in wind
direction happens
before thunderstorms
from. The wind speed
increases and the
height creates a
invisible spinning effect
in the lower
atmosphere.
• 2. Rising air in the
thunderstorm tilts the
rotating air from
horizontal to vertical.
• 3. And area of rotation
2-6 miles wide now
forms the tornado.
When and where do tornados
happen?
• All the time but mostly during the spring
• Mostly along the front range of the Rocky
Mountains in “Tornado alley”. But can occur
anywhere.

How can you prepare for a tornado?
• Stay Informed about the storm. Make sure you know
where it is going.
• Look out for the WATCHES and the WARNINGS.
• Have a set place to hide if the storm is close. Make
sure your not near any windows.
• Make sure you set place is safe and not going to be
damaged by the storm. Like a basement or a
bathroom.
• It’s a good idea to have a radio with you to hear
updated about the storm.
