Title 46:Fronts and the weather
Title 47: Types of Fronts
Warm Up: prediction…what do you think
happens when two different types of air masses
(or pressures) meet? Explain your thoughts
• Glue in “what’s it all about”
• Update table of contents
Objective
• SWBAT: identify the movement of warm
and cool air in different types of fronts IOT
describe the weather patterns that are
associated with these fronts.
What’s It All About?
• I bet your wondering what causes different types of
weather? Like, a couple of days ago when we had a
really strong thunderstorm with lots of thunder and
lightning. It didn’t last long, but it sure dumped a lot of
rain. But, then sometimes we had like 5 days of rain in a
row! It was just miserable and gloomy. So, what’s the
difference? The answer lies in the topic of FRONTS.
Title (below WIAA)
Weather and Climate Textbook pages 75-77
• Do not write yet…lets read “Fronts” on
page 75.
• Write a definition for fronts in your own
words towards the top of your note-taking
area (there will be much more to write)

IMPORTANT NOTES
THE BIG PICTURE: What happens
when the air meets?
Cold Front
COLD AIR
COMES IN…
Warm air
holding lots of
moisture, rises
and cools to
form clouds.
Thunderstorms happen quick, then
cold and dry air follow
Your turn…
• Read through and complete warm fronts,
stationary fronts and occluded fronts on
your own
• Don’t FORGET to include:
– A picture (two air masses meet)
– What happens to each air mass?
– What kind of weather comes?
– What type of weather follows?
Warm Front
Fast
moving
warm air
takes over
slow
moving
cold air
Clouds and precipitation (longer
time), then humid air follows
Stationary Fronts
When cold
and warm
air mass
meet, and
don’t move
Rain, snow, fog or clouds…can last many
days
Occluded Fronts
Warm air is
trapped in
between to
cold air
masses
Cloudy, rain or snow (depending on
moisture in the air)
Practice with Pressure and Front
Low pressure ~ rain
Cold front ~ Severe

Choice assignment
• Story, poem, summary, comic or preapproved writing
• Include:
– One of the four types of fronts
– What happens to the air masses when they
meet?
– What kind or weather will take place and for
how long?
