Transcript Observation and Recording of the weather.

How does the weather affect your life?
What is the weather like today?
Is the weather like this every day in
Sanlucar?
What is the climate like in Spain?
L/O:
To know what the difference between weather
and the climate is
To know the weathers main components
To know how the weather can be measured
accurately
Homework Due: 7 mark exam
coral reef question
What is the difference between
weather and climate?
 Weather:
The short term atmospheric changes day to day
 Climate:
The average weather conditions over a period of time
Many places will have the same kind of weather season to
season and therefore will have the same kind of
climate.
But in some places the climate is changing
e.g. Artic is getting warmer
Morocco is getting drier
The weather components:
(what we look at to know the weather)
You have seven different things that make up the
weather:
Temperature
2. Precipitation
3. Wind speed
4. Wind direction
5. Cloud cover (how many clouds)
6. Air pressure
Humidity (how much water there is in the air)

Description
Precipitation
Precipitation e.g. hail,
snow, rain etc.
With what is it
measured?
Labelled drawing of
instrument
Rain gauge
Metal or plastic funnel
How is it
recorded?
Millimeters (mm)
Fill in your own table using
page 234 to help you
Cloud cover
How many clouds
there are in the sky
A piece of paper divided into 8

A decision is made about how
much cloud cover there is out

The 4 thermometers inside this screen are:1 Maximum thermometer - this measures the highest
temperature of the day
2 Minimum thermometer - this measures the lowest
temperature of the day.
We can work out the average temperature for the
day by adding these 2 readings and dividing by two.
i.e. Average Daily temperature = Maximum
Temperature + Minimum Temperature divided by 2
To work out the average monthly temperature, add
up the average temperature for each day in the
month and divide by the number of days in the
month.
3 Dry bulb thermometer - this measures air
temperature.
4 Wet bulb thermometer - this shows us the amount
of water vapour in the atmosphere.
Rain falling on the funnel is collected in a
bottle and this is measured each day.
The wind catches the three cups and as
they spin round the wind speed is shown
on a dial.
We can easily estimate the wind speed by
looking at the effect that the wind has on
objects around us. This is given as a
number between 0 and 12 on the Beaufort
Scale.
We measure wind direction with a wind
vane (see diagram). Wind direction is the
compass point from which the wind is
coming eg south, south west, west etc.
The unit of measurement for wind direction
is therefore compass direction.
The earth is surrounded by a layer of gas
known as the atmosphere. The weight of
this air puts a pressure on the earth's
surface (the same way as your weight puts
pressure on a set of scales). We measure
air pressure in millibars (mb) with a
barometer.
The Stevenson Screen
The Stevenson Screen
Page 86
A Stevenson screen is used to protect weather
instruments from giving uneven results. It
consists of:
- A square box on a stand of 110cm above the
ground so it does not come into contact with
the ground
- The box had slatted sides
- The roof is made of double boards
- It is painted white to reflect the sun’s rays
- In a place with no trees or buildings to make
sure the readings are accurate
Task: Draw and
label your own
Stevenson screen
Then: explain why
it:
a) Is painted white
b) Has slatted
sides
Then: Explain why
preventing it from
coming into
contact with the
ground or being by
trees or buildings
makes the
readings
inaccurate.
