TECHNOLOGY
IS USED TO:
1- solve problems
2- develop a new device
or process
3- change how people do things
Weather & Technology
There are many tools that are used
to predict and report the weather:
1 – barometer – shows air pressure
2- anemometer – measures wind speed
3- hygrometer – measures the moisture in the air
4- rain gauge – measures how much rain has fallen
5- radar – can measure the winds and
precipitation in a storm
Barometers
A. Barometers
1- Measure air pressure
2- Air pressure is expressed in “barometers.”
3- High air pressure
a. symbolized by an “H”
b. usually means sunny, clear skies
c. as temps go up, so does air pressure
4- Low air pressure
a. symbolized by an “L”
b. usually means rain
c. as temps drop, air pressure drops
5- Wind is caused by differences in air pressure
and temperature.
Anemometers
B. Anemometers
1- measures wind speed
Hygrometer
C. Hygrometers
1- measure the moisture in the air
2- horse hair
a. some have a horse hair
attached to the pointer
b. the hair will shorten in drier
air, moving the pointer
Rain Gauges & Radars
D. Rain Gauges
1- measure rainfall amount
2- are often wider at the top
a. this helps catch more rain when just a small amount
falls
b. this makes it easier to measure tiny amounts of rain
E. Radar
1- measure winds & precipitation in a storm
2- how it works
a. radar station sends out energy like a radio signal
b. energy bounces off of objects, like raindrops
c. the changes in the returning energy show a storm’s
direction and speed
Weather Forecasters
F. Weather Forecasters
1- The more information forecasters have, the better
their
weather predictions will be.
2- Maps
a. they use many types of maps
b. the following symbols are commonly seen on
weather maps:
High
Pressure
Low Pressure
Warm Front
Stationary
Front
Cold Front
1.What is Technology?
A. Technology
1-def.: the use of scientific knowledge for a practical purpose
2- can have both positive & negative effects
a. positive
* helps people find ways to do things faster
* helps people find ways to do things easier
b. negative
* can increase personal isolation from others
* may increase pollution
3- common results of technology
a. machines
b. inventions
c. gadgets
B. Inventors
1- def. – someone who uses technology to develop a new device or
process, to solve a problem, or to change how people do things
2-famous inventors
a. George Washington Carver
*invented the process of crop rotation
* crop rotation: when farmers rotate what
crop they plant in order to keep the soil
fertile
b. Thomas Edison
* the phonograph (the 1st recorder of music)
* he improved the invention of the light bulb (which
was actually invented by Sir Joseph Swan of
England)
* motion picture camera (movie camera)
2.Technology Uses
A. Our Homes
1. Easier & More Convenient
a. Cell phones – communication with others
b. Dishwashers
c. Microwave Ovens – cook food faster
d. Calculators
e. Thermostats – maintain or change the temperature
of our homes
2. Entertainment
a. Radios
b. Televisions
c. CD players
*CD technology led to the
creation of DVDs
d. DVD players
e. Video games
3. Other Advances for Homes
a. Keeping & Storing Food
* Before refrigerators: people used slabs of ice (cut during
the winter from frozen lakes/ponds) stored in icehouses that were
covered with thick layers of straw (to prevent melting) to keep food
cold
* Today, refrigerators and freezers offer a healthy way to
store food for long periods of time.
* Plastic technology
**has created an inexpensive way to store food in an
airtight environment
**keeps food safe from harmful bacteria for longer
periods of time – so it’s healthier!
b. Creation of New Home Concepts
* Mobile homes – inexpensive and easily transported
* Amazing towers – tall enough to hold an entire city
3. Technology & Work
Technology often changes the way jobs are done – when this happens
entire societies can be changed in big ways!
A. Manufacturing
1.def. – the production of goods on a large scale
2- Example: Cars
a. Old way (before manufacturing):
* in the early 1900’s
* Cars were built one at a time until the car was complete
* Built by one group of workers
* This process was slow and expensive
* This process made the price of cars very high – so high,
that most people couldn’t afford them
b.Assembly Line
* invented by Henry Ford
* def – a development of manufacturing where a
product moves through a factory while
workers add parts to it
* quicker and less expensive way of making products
* quick and less expensive manufacturing of cars: lowered car prices
* car prices low enough so that more people could afford them
* more people with cars completely changed society and the standard
of living in America
* today’s assembly lines:
** robots & other machines are often used
** using machines instead of people is often
cheaper and more mistake-proof
** the negative effect of this is people losing
their jobs to machines
