Water in the Atmosphere
The Water Cycle
The transfer of water between the atmosphere and
Earth’s surface.
1. Water evaporates
from plants and
bodies of water
2. Water condenses in
the atmosphere and
forms clouds
3. Clouds become
saturated and water
falls as precipitation
to the surface
4. Water runs off
surface into lakes,
streams and oceans.
Humidity
The amount of water
vapor in the air.
Amount of water vapor
compared to the
amount the air can
hold – Relative
Humidity
Measured with a
psychrometer
Making a psychrometer
Dew Point
Condensation = process
where water vapor
changes into a liquid
– The air must be saturated
for condensation to occur
(100% humidity) and have
a surface to condense on.
Dew Point = the
temperature at which a
gas condenses into a
liquid.
Clouds
Forms when water vapor in the air
condenses and becomes liquid water or
ice crystals.
Water vapor must attach to a particle in
the atmosphere in order to condense back
to a liquid.
Types of Clouds
1.
Cumulus – look like rounded piles of cotton.
Indicate fair weather.
–
Cumulonimbus = T-storm clouds
Stratus – cover most of the sky. May produce
drizzle.
3. Cirrus – High wispy feathery clouds. Made of
ice crystals.
