FRIDAY APRIL 13, 2012
OBJECTIVE:
YOU WILL KNOW WHAT AN ECOSYSTEM
IS.
QUIZ RESULTS
Overall, the grades were acceptable enough for us to
move into our new unit. If you and your group
received a score of 14 or lower, you will need to see
me to get some extra help before you will be allowed
to retake the quiz.
NEW UNIT
Our new unit is going to cover:
• Populations
• Communities
• Ecosystems
• Biomes
VOCABULARY
We are going to complete a vocabulary window pane
activity. In this, you will need to provide a definition, a
sentence that includes the word, and a picture that shows
the meaning of the word. The words include:
Biosphere
Community
Population
Competition
Biotic Potential
Limiting Factor
Population Density
Carrying Capacity
Use Chapter 11, Section 1 (p.315-319)
LIMITING FACTOR
• Anything that restricts (limits) the size of a
population.
Hunting deer is a limiting factor because it limits the
size of the deer population.
POPULATION DENSITY
• The size of a population compared to the amount
of space available
• India has a greater population density than the U.S.
because there are more people living in a smaller
area .
BIOTIC POTENTIAL
• The potential growth of a population if it could grow
in perfect conditions (with no limiting factors)
• No species ever reaches its biotic potential
because there are limited resources.
CARRYING CAPACITY
• The largest amount of one species that an
environment can support
“Sorry Marlin, you are going to have to
leave, there isn’t enough room for you
here!”
• The amount of water available limited the lake’s
carrying capacity for fish.
THURSDAY…
1. Finish vocabulary activity
2. Begin working on Guided Reading Packet (green
book)
Friday…

ECOSYSTEM
• All the living and nonliving things that interact in an
area.
• The ecosystem was made up of all the plants,
animals, insects, soil, and water.
