Daily Science
• What is Life?
• Scenario – A group of scientists from the Biology department
at the University of Kentucky, were surveying a reclaimed
mine site in Eastern Kentucky. One of the scientist found an
unknown object. The object was a solid green and black
circular disk about the size of a Frisbee. The scientists do not
know if the object is living or not living.
Part A – Choose one of the six characteristics of all living
organism. Describe why it is a characteristic.
Part B – Design a controlled experiment to test the
characteristics that you choose. Include the following in the
design of the experiment; control group, experiment group,
independent variables, dependent variables, description of
the experiment, and drawings
Daily Science
Why do you think it would be helpful to know
chemical properties?
Why is it helpful to know physical
properties?
Daily Science
1)Why is it important to observe physical
properties?
2)What is matter?
3)What two properties are related to the
measurement of density?
4)What can density tell us about a subject?

• Ms. Santiago mixed sawdust and copper
fillings in a pan for a classroom
demonstration. After the demonstration,
she wanted to separate the copper filings
from the sawdust.
Part A – Identify two physical properties of wood
and copper.
Part B – Using the properties of wood and copper,
explain how to separate a mixture of sawdust
and copper fillings.
Daily Science SC-06• Hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes have
continued to occur lately, just as they have
always occurred in the past. Weather and
geologic events affect how cultures and
populations change.
Part A – Predict two ways how the recent hurricanes will
affect population shifts in the United States.
Part B – Describe two ways that recent natural disasters
such as hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes have
changed the way that people plan for the future.
Daily Science
• What pulls on us?
Part A – Explain the evidence that exist that
the moon’s gravity has an impact on the
Earth.
Part B – Do high tides reach the same part
of the beach every time during the month?
Fully explain the reasons why or why not
in detail. Use diagrams if necessary.
Daily Science SC-06-1.2.1 DOK 3
• Imagine that you slide a brick on three
increasingly slippery surfaces: a dry
sidewalk, a wet sidewalk, and an icy
sidewalk
Part A – Under which condition will the brick
slide the farthest?
Part B- Give an explanation for your answer
in terms of friction.
Daily Science SC-06-3.5.1 DOK 2
• A scientist discovers a new species of
hummingbird in a rain forest. The new species is
similar to another species of hummingbird, but
the new species has a longer beak and nest in
taller trees.
Part A What can scientist learn from studying the
differences between the two species?
Part B How can these differences be explained
with genetics.
Daily Science SC-06-2.3.1 DOK 3
• In geography class, Max is learning about Chile.
The geography teacher says that when its
summer in North America, it is winter in Chile.
Part A – Create a diagram to show how the
seasons occur.
Part B- Explain how the seasons are different in
North America and South America

• Water is constantly cycling within the
atmosphere. Water plays an important role
in determining weather patterns and
climate.
• Part A – Describe how the Sun’s energy is
involved in the water cycle.
• Part B- Explain how the water cycle is
related to weather patterns and climate
Daily Science SC-06-4.7.1 DOK 2
• A forest is cut down to make space for a
new mall.
• Part A- Identify two effects of this activity
on the forest ecosystem.
• Part B- What effect could this have on the
environment?
