Transcript Species Diversity

Group Work
• Get into groups of 4
• Within your groups you are to look at your homework from
last night (Read pg 3 “A First or Last Chance to See”)
• Your group will determine from the 20 different “key
pieces” of information, the FIVE MOST IMPORTANT
• Work together to write a paragraph of five sentences
that incorporates that information
• You MUST write this in your own words, copying
of any textbook work is an example of
PLAGIARISM
• How are we able to classify millions
of different species?
• What role have humans played in
affecting biodiversity?
“The variety and number of life forms on
Earth (biological diversity)”
-measure of ecosystem health

Morphology
• animals vs. plants
• asexual reproduction (fungi, plants,
micro-organisms)
MORPHOLOGY
“the physical appearance and
characteristics of an organism”
Genes
Individual Variability
- individuals found within the same species can show differences in their morphology
1. Over Time and Space
• Evolutionary change: a change that
occurs in an entire population (over
LONG period of time)
• physical and behavioural
• what causes?
2. Biodiversity
• Genetic diversity: the genetic variability
among organisms (same species)
• sexual reproduction
• unique offspring
Combination of different species and
physical environment they inhabit
• Heterotrophs and autotrophs
Species Diversity
• takes into account the
quantity of each species as well
as the variety of species
present
• The larger and more
diverse, the healthier/stable
the ecosystem
• monoculture vs. polyculture
• species interactions?
and
Habitat Diversity
Species Interactions
• Complete the chart in your notes using Tbl 1: Species Interactions on pg. 11

Habitat Diversity
Structural diversity: the
range of physical shapes
and sizes within a habitat
of ecosystem
Greater structural diversity
 greater species diversity
 greater biodiversity

humans (pg. 12)
