Q1. All six animals share a common ancestor from
approximately 350 millions years ago, from which they, or
there most recent ancestor, diverged from in an
evolutionary sense. (think this one is right)
Q2. Homologous structures found in all six organisms
would support phylogenic tree. Characteristics which did
not arise due to selective pressure, but rather due to a
common ancestory. What is an example of this in these
marine animals? Flap like structures on their side - wings
(penguin) and fins (fish)? Unsure.
Q3. Divergent evolution. A variety of species with different
physcial features emerged over a long period of time from
a common ancestoral population/species. Therefore,
since this is all characteristic of divergent evolution, the
phylogenic tree depicts divergent evolution. (think is right)
4. Dolphins and killer whales. Share most recent common
ancestor from 50 million years ago, and therefore most
similar. (think is right)
5. Speciation (or adaptive radiation)
6. Examples?
7. Stream line body, etc. Species do not share a recent
common ancestor, yet have similar structures with similar
functions due to these organisms experiencing similar
selective pressures.
