Chapter One: Exploring Life
1.1) Biologists explore life from
the microscopic to the global scale
1.2) Biological systems are much
more than the sum of their parts
1.3) Biologists explore life across
its great diversity of species

Welcome to the Team!

Get the Basics!



Hierarchy of Biological Organization
12 levels starting from Biosphere to Atom.
Cells are the smallest level that can perform all
activities for life. 9th level
 Reductionism
 Species are classified in Taxonomy
 Three Domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya
 Natural Selection: survival of the fittest
 Hypothesis so they can make a prediction
 Test Hypothesis to see if the prediction is correct
 Theory is made up of hypothesises.
 Science is a very social subject
Do you Get it?

Energy Conversion: Where’s the batteries?
•
Everything works together, living organisms live and
feed off each other’s energy.
Only Two Cell Types: Eukaryotic & Prokaryotic
Negative & Positive Feedback: Simple Terms 
•
•
•
Both: Forms of regulation
Negative: Slows/ Ends a process
Positive: Speeds/ Continues a process
Enzymes vs. Catalysts: Say whaa?
•
•
•
A Catalyst is… a chemical agent that changes the rate
of a reaction.
An Enzyme is… a protein acting as a catalyst.
An enzyme can act as a catalyst but a catalyst can not
be an enzyme [like squares and rectangles]
You Should Care!
 We
will study Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic
Cells in chapter 6, which involves the
study of cells and their functions in living
organisms.
 We will study feedback in chapter 40,
when we study how the body regulates its
own temperature using evaporative heat
loss.
Know Your Stuff?
 How would a tree make use of all the non-
living factors in its environment?
 How does that tree interact with other living
organisms in its environment?
 How does the flow of sunlight affect
consumer organisms?
 Give an example of the process of cycling
nutrients.
 What is the basis for all reproduction and the
growth and repair of multicellual organisms?
