Ecology
Introduction
Biology
Standard 6a
Ecology
• Study of an organism and its
interactions w/ its environment
Population
• A group of organisms of the
same species.
Community
• A group of populations interacting
with each other in an area.
Ecosystem
• An area made up
of living
organisms and
nonliving things
(many
communities).
• Living items:
biotic
• Nonliving items:
abiotic
Biotic
Abiotic
Ocean-Abiotic
Sunfish-Biotic
Soil-Abiotic
Worm-Biotic
Nutrients
• Are needed in an ecosystem
to sustain life.
• IMPORTANT: Carbon, Water,
Oxygen, and Nitrogen
Water Cycle
• H2O  Enters air by evaporation from
waterway. Also through transpiration:
H2O leaves plants).
Water Cycle
• In air, H2O condenses to form clouds,
which create rain precipitation
Water Cycle
• Rain returns H2O back to land or ocean.
• On land, H2O has 2 options.
a) can travel down into ground to feed
groundwater reserves (percolation).
b) water can runoff land into rivers and back out
to ocean
