DSQ
You
throw 5 stones as hard as you
can. Each stone is the exactly the
same size and shape but each stone
is heavier then the preceding stone.
Ignoring muscle fatigue, what will
happen to the distance with each
additional throw?
Vocabulary
6. Net Force – the overall force when all individual forces are
added together.
20 N
10 N
Vocabulary
7. Unbalanced forces – a nonzero net force that changes an
object’s motion
Vocabulary
8. Balanced forces – equal forces acting on an object in opposite
directions
Vocabulary
9. mass – the amount of matter in an object.
Does mass = weight?

Newton’s
Law of Motion
AKA: Inertia
An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends
to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction
unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s
nd

Law of Motion
The net force of an object is equal to the product of its acceleration
and its mass.
Force = mass x acceleration
F=mxa
Newton’s

Law of Motion
Units are Newtons (N) where N = kg x m/s^2
One Newton (N) = the force required to accelerate one kilogram of
mass at one meter per second per second
Manipulating the Formula
F=MxA
M=F/A
A=F/M
Solving for Force
What net force is required to accelerate a car at a rate of 2 m/s2 if
the car has a mass of 3,000 kg?
Solving for Acceleration
What is the acceleration of softball if it has a mass of 0.5 kg and hits
the catcher's glove with a force of 25 N?
Solving for Mass
What is the mass of a truck if it produces a force of 14,000 N while
accelerating at a rate of 5 m/s2 ?
