Simple Machines
• What is a simple machine?
Something that has few or no moving parts
that help make work easier.
The six simple machines are:
• Inclined plane
wedge
• Pulley
wheel and axle
• Lever
screw

Law’s of Motion
1) An object at rest will stay at rest
2) Force=mass X acceleration
3) Equal but opposite reaction
Vocabulary
• Gravity
A force that pulls objects toward one another
based on the objects mass.
(gravity -= 9.8 m/s2)
• Force
Push or a pull
Unit = N (Newton)
• Friction
A force between two surfaces that resist motion
(Opposite forces acting on one another)
Vocabulary
• Work
W=Fd work (J) = force(N) X distance (m)
amount of energy transferred by a force acting through a
distance ….unit: joule (J)
(Work is measured in joules like length is measured in centimeters)
Ex: 10 N X 500 m = 5000 J
• Energy
ability to perform work or cause a change
Potential = stored
kinetic = moving
Vocabulary
• Velocity
The rate of motion in a specific direction
Ex: 35 km/hr north
• Average speed
A measure of distance divided by time

• Restrooms, drinking fountains, locker rooms, entrances,
corridors….

Lever
• A lever is a bar that rests on a support
called a fulcrum which lifts or moves
loads.
Wheel and Axle
• A wheel with a rod, called an axle,
through its center lifts or moves loads.
Pulley
• A pulley is a simple machine that uses
grooved wheels and a rope to raise,
lower or move a load.
Inclined Plane
• An inclined plane is a slanting surface
connecting a lower level to a higher
level.
Wedge
• A wedge is an object with at least one
slanting side ending in a sharp edge,
which cuts material apart.

• A screw is an inclined plane wrapped
around a pole which holds things
together or lifts materials.

• Make a Tree Map to classify examples of
simple machines.
• Choose 3 of the 6 simple machines
• Give 5 examples of each. Use the simple
machines hand out to help you.
