People Grow and Change
by Denise Carroll
Life Cycle
People grow
and change.
THINK:
How does your body
grow and change?
As you grow, your appearance changes.
You get bigger.
You get taller.
You get stronger
You get heavier.
Your looks change.
Your hair style changes.
Permanent teeth grow.
You learn new things.
All people grow and change.
Teeth
Each person has two sets
of teeth during his
lifetime.
The first set is called baby
teeth. There are 20 baby
teeth.
Between the ages of 6-13,
a person will lose these
teeth.
Between the ages of 6-17,
the baby teeth are
replaced with permanent
teeth.
There are 32 permanent
teeth.
The Skeleton
The skeleton is all the bones in
your body.
You have about 206 bones in
your body.
1. Bones protect organs such as
the brain, the heart, and our
lungs.
2. Bones give us shape. Without
our skeleton, we would be a blob
of tissue on the floor.
3. Bones help us to move. Muscles
are attached to our bones, when
our muscles move, they move
the bones, and we move.
Muscles
Bones and muscles work
together.
Muscles are body parts under
the skin that helps the bones
move.
Muscles allow you to bend or
straighten your arms and
legs.
There are more than 600
muscles in the human body.
THINK:
What do my bones and
muscles do?
Bones and Muscles
Bones give our body
shape.
Bones protect
organs.
Bones and muscles
work together to
move the body.
Exercise and
healthful foods keep
our bones and
muscles healthy.

The Heart
Your heart is a muscle that
pumps blood to every part of
your body.
It is about the size of your
fist and weighs less than a
pound.
It keeps you alive.
Your heart pumps more than 5
quarts of blood through the
body every minute.
Your heart rate is how fast or
slow your heart beats. Your
heart beats about 72 times a
minute.
What do you think will
happen to our heart rate
when we exercise?
Let’s see!
Lungs
Your lungs are body
parts that help you
breathe the air you
need to live.
You have two lungs.
When you breathe air
through your mouth or
nose, the air goes down
a tube to your lungs.
When you breathe your
chest expands.
How does your heart and
lungs work together?
Your heart and lungs
help keep you alive.
Your heart and lungs
carry oxygen to all
parts of the body.
Exercise makes the
heart and lungs stronger
and healthier.
Let’s learn how our body
digests food.
Digest means to break
down food in the body.
Esophagus
When you chew your
food, it mixes with a
liquid in your mouth
called saliva.
Saliva helps break
down food.
Once food has been
chewed and swallowed,
it goes down a tube
called the esophagus.
Stomach
Once the food goes down
the esophagus, the food
enters the stomach.
The stomach continues to
break down the food. It
has muscles that mash
food into a sloppy soup.
Large and Small Intestines
L
S
Food leaves the stomach
and enters the small
intestine. Nutrients your
body needs from the food
you eat goes to all parts
of the body.
You have about 20 feet
of small intestines.
Food that your body does
not need goes to the
large intestine.
THINK:
How do I digest food?
Digestive System
Digestion begins when food enters the
mouth where saliva and teeth break it
down.
Once food has been chewed and
swallowed, it goes down a tube called
the esophagus to the stomach.
Stomach muscles mix the food and
moves it to the small intestine.
Food that your body does not need goes
to the large intestine.

exercise
