What is Culture?
 Culture is the total knowledge, attitudes, and
behaviors shared by and passed on by
members of a group

Cultural Characteristics
 Cultural Characteristics: language, religion,
and ethnic heritage
 These characteristics can link (unify) or divide
(create conflict between) the people in a
region.

 The Arabic language unites the Arab world
 The Spanish language unites Latin America
 Spanish speaking countries are called Hispanic
 The French language unites the Francophone World
(French-Speaking)
 Many African countries
 Haiti

 Brazil is one of the few South American nations
where most people do NOT speak Spanish.
 The major language is Portuguese
 This is a result of Portugal colonizing Brazil

nation. It has both French

region of Canada with
French culture and

 Switzerland has multiple languages but very little
conflict between the groups
 English is now considered a world language and is
used for most business transactions around the

 In the area that was formerly Yugoslavia there were
different cultural groups in one country
 Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians
 They experienced conflict that led to a war.
 Today, Yugoslavia does not exist; these ethnic groups
got their own countries

 In the countries of Rwanda and Burundi in Africa, two
ethnic groups are dominate

 These groups have been at war at various times and
have engaged in ethnic cleansing (genocide)
