and 2 correspond to the southeast sector, southwest, northwest and

northern part, and levels 5 and 6 to the north. The 47.5% of the

2. Population Distribution across
Barranquilla
Ethnic composition
13.2% of the population living in Barranquilla recognized himself as raizal,
palenquero, black, mulato, Afro-Colombian or Afro-descendant; to 0.1% as
indigenous. To complete the ethnic composition, the city includes the Caucasian
races and small Semite communities (Jews and Arabs in the Middle East).
Education
The education in the city is regulated by the Secretary of Education, Mayor
District Dependence. The city offers the national education system in the levels
of elementary, high school and university, as well as multiple technical and
technological institutions. In recent decades, Barranquilla served the student
population, who could nor pursue higher education studies in the absence of
institutions in their places of origin, by receiving them from other parts of the
coast and from the rest of the country. This situation tends to decrease in
recent years due to the increased educational coverage achieved in these
regions.
3. Population Growth in Barranquilla
Approximately
1,144,470
people live in the urban
areas and 4,036 in rural
areas.
The
population
density is 6,918.71 habitants
per square kilometer.
Today, Barranquilla begins to
regain the momentum and
spirit that characterizes it. Its
growth and progress help
recover the much deserved
title of “The Golden Gate of
Colombia”.
The rapid urban growth is generated because of the political and economic
situation in Colombia, which makes the peasants move to the main cities in
search of centers of economic development.
