Vocabulary Words
1) Geography- Study of people, their
environments and their resources
2) Latitude Lines – Measure distance North
or South of the Equator
3) Equator- Imaginary line drawn around the earth,
dividing the earth into northern and southern
hemispheres
4) Longitude Lines- Distance east or west of the Prime
Meridian
5)Prime Meridian- Imaginary line at 0 degrees
longitude that divides the world into Western and
Eastern hemispheres
6)Migration- Movement of groups of people to other
regions to better satisfy their needs and wants
7) Region- areas of the world with similar geographic
features
8)Climate – The weather conditions in an area
9) Cultural Diffusion- the spreading of ideas or
products from one culture to another
10) Cartographer- mapmaker
11) Archeologist- Someone who studies the cultures
and people of the past.
12) Anthropologist – Someone who studies the
origins and development of people and their societies
13) Economy- The wealth and resources of a country
or region (business)
14) Political system- the organization of power
within a society (government)
15)Sociology- the study of the development,
structure, and functioning of human society

16) Ethnic group- People of the same race or
nationality who share a distinctive culture
17) Golden Age-The high point of a society that
usually involves a time period peace and
prosperity
18) Ideographs – Symbols that stand for certain
phrases/language within a culture
19) Ideology – system of thought and beliefs
20) Market economy – An economy based off the
buying and selling of goods that ultimately
determine prices.
21)Natural resources – minerals or substances found
in a given area. Lumber, water, Iron, fertile land, etc
22) Navigable Rivers – Rivers that are ideal for the
transportation of people and goods
23) Peninsula – A piece of land that is surrounded on
three sides by water.
24) Primary Source – A source taken directly from
someone experiencing the event
25) Secondary Source – Source taken by someone
who did not experience the event and is retelling it.
