History
Like many European regions, Tyrol looks back on a very eventful
history. Situated in the heart of Europe it has always been at the
crossroads from north to south and east to west. Emperors and
Popes have shown their interest in this strategic region, but Tyrol
has long maintained its independence. Later it became a vital
province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Today the former crossroads have turned into transit highways for the
growing flood of traffic.
Industry
Tyrol has a strong economy with
numerous small and medium
sized companies and a few
globally active industries.
The country's most important
industry, however, is tourism.
Tyrol, with its well-developed
market economy and high
standard of living, is closely tied
to other EU economies.

Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) was an
Austrian physicist who was born in
Alpbach, a small mountain village in
Tyrol. He became famous as the

Schrödinger produced equations that
explained the behavior of electrons in
atoms. These equations formed the
basis of wave and quantum
mechanics. In 1933 he was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Physics.
