EURESCOM P616
ENHANCED ATM IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES
Project objectives: to advance the specification of a wide area ATM VC switched
network, by completing open issues in the specifications achieved in previous
EURESCOM ATM projects.
Task 1 - Network Architecture
Task 2 - Congestion Control
Task 3 - Usage Metering for Charging and Accounting
Task 4 - Network Layer Protocols over ATM
Participating Companies: Belgacom, Deutsche Telekom, Finnet, Norwegian
Telecom, Portugal Telecom (PL), Swiss Telecom, Telecom Finland, Telecom Italia,
Telefónica.

TASK 1
NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
Objectives
• Focus on specific ATM network architecture aspects related with a
demanding service - Broadband Multimedia Conference.
• Study of the implementation of the Xcoop interface over ATM connections.
Main Results
• Study of solutions to implement the Broadband Multimedia Conference on a
reference network architecture.
• Establishment of scenarios for Multimedia Conference service interworking
in a B-ISDN/N-ISDN environment.
• Evaluation of the feasibility of PNNI 1.0 routing in a large scale network.
• Proposal for the implementation of the Xcoop interface over ATM.

TASK 2
CONGESTION CONTROL
Objectives
• Definition of an integrated approach for traffic control in an ATM VC switched
network, taking into account the mutual influences among the different
functions implemented at the different levels.
Main Results
• Methods for supporting a multiplicity of ATM Layer Transfer Capabilities and
QoS classes within the network.
• Connection routing algorithms.
• Network dimensioning principles.
• Methods for evaluating end-to-end performance at cell level.
• Parameters to characterise call level performance.

TASK 3
USAGE METERING FOR CHARGING AND ACCOUNTING
Objectives
• To identify and evaluate usage metering parameters for charging/accounting
in an ATM network.
Main Results
• Identification and specification of usage metering parameters.
• Identification of the network measurement points for collecting charging and
accounting data.
• Identification of a minimum set of parameters to be transferred between
PNO´s for charging/accounting purposes.
•
Establishment of the demands that the
charging/accounting places into the network elements.

TASK 4
NETWORK LAYER PROTOCOLS
Objectives
• To define scenarios and solutions to effectively run multiple network layer
protocols over ATM.
Main Results
• Overview of the state-of-the-art solutions, namely MPOA, Tag Switching, Cell
Switch Router, ARIS and IP Switching.
• Comparative evaluation of the distinct solutions.
• Practical evaluation of the WinSock v2 concept.
• Migration strategies / Guidelines to PNO’s.
