PART 2.
IMS: IP Multimedia Subsystem

SIP(Session Initiation
Protocol)

 Figure 1 presents a simplified view of the IMS architecture; we have
divided the network into three parts: the service layer, the control layer,
and the access network.

Principles: OpenGardens, Walled gardens and Mobile
Web 2.0
Open systems
 ‘Openness’ itself can mean many tings:
 Openness of access for the customer:
 Open source
OpenGardens and Walled gardens
 A ‘walled garden’ is a mechanism to restrict the user to a defined
environment i.e forcing them by some means to stay within the confines
of a digital space.
 A walled garden is any mechanism for an entity to restrict the user
experience by confining the user to a specific region / space as defined
by the entity.

 OpenGardens/Open systems primarily means ‘open platforms’ when
applied to the mobile network operator.
 Technologically, in its ultimate form, this approach can be viewed as
'API enabling’ a Telecoms network. API (Applications Programming
Interface) is the software that enables service provision by the Mobile
operator. The external application can make a software call via the
published API, thereby creating a 'plug and play' ecosystem.
Mobile Web 2.0 and OpenGardens
 Mobile web 2.0 become prevalent because Web 2.0 is all about
harnessing collective intelligence. To harness collective intelligence
effectively, we need a large ‘body of intelligence’ i.e. a large body of
people.
Will walled gardens work?
 As users matured, they realized that the restrictions were often a
hindrance and ultimately, there are lot less restrictions now on AOL.

Principles: Unlimited use price plans for mobile data
Why have unlimited use price plans for mobile data?
 Unlimited use data price plans are ‘all use can use’ data plans for a fixed
monthly data charge.
Princilpes: The disruptive potential of Wi-Fi and WiMAX
Wi-Fi mesh networks
 Wi-Fi (pronounced wye-fye, IPA) also unofficially known as Wireless Fidelity,
is a wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance intended to
improve the interoperability of wireless local area network products based on
the IEEE 802.11 standards.
 Wi-Fi or Wireless LANs is a term which refers to a set of products that are
based on the IEEE 802.11 specification. The most popular and widely used
Wireless LAN standard at the moment is 802.11b, which operates in the
2.4GHz spectrum along with cordless phones, microwave ovens and Bluetooth.
 Wi-Fi enabled computers or PDA can connect to the Internet when in the
proximity of an access point popularity called a ‘hotspot’.

WiMAX



WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a
telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long
distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile
cellular type access.
WiMAX stands for wireless interoperability for Microwave access and is
defined by IEEE 802.16 standards. It is promoted and standardized by the
WiMAX forum.
Mobile WiMAX (specified in 802.162-2005), on the other hand, evolved
much later.
Spectrum issues


Wi-Fi operates in the unlicensed spectrum with 802.11b in the 2.4 GHz and
802.11a in the 5GHz.
WiMAX in the other hand can operate in either licensed or unlicensed
frequencies from 2 GHz to 6 GHz.
