Beijing first became China’s capital in 1421 until the collapse of dynastic rule in 1911. The Japanese invasion in 1931 was
followed by civil war, culminating with the founding of the People’s Republic of China by the Chinese Communist party,
who declared Beijing as the capital. It was not until the late 19th century that Westerners were allowed to reside there and
all trading links had previously been restricted to Canton.
