The Starkville School District established the Department of
Family Centered Programs in 1994
Effort to strengthen families of the students served by the
District. Since its inception the Department has successfully
reached thousands of families with a special emphasis on at-risk
families through numerous school-based and community-wide
programs for all age-groups.
A strong emphasis is placed on using evidence-based practices
and curricula in programs and services.
Programming is primarily funded through federal, state, local
and private foundation grants. In addition, Family Centered
Programs has established strong linkages with community
organizations in order to provide the services needed by these
families.






◦ 64.60% White, 30.02% African American,
0.15%Native American, 3.75% Asian, 0.04% Pacific
Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.80% from
two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race
were 1.34% of the population.

Emerson Family Resource Center:
◦ The Emerson Family Resource Center (EFRC)
operates out of the Starkville School District's
Emerson Family School. The EFRC strengthens
families in Oktibbeha County through parenting,
enrichment, support, and referral services. EFRC
also collaborates with other area organizations,
agencies and groups through its Advisory Council
to promote strong families throughout the
community.

Building Strong Families:
◦ Building Strong Families is a 3-year project to improve
marriage and relationship skills and provide job and career
advancement activities for area families. This project provides
marriage education, enrichment, mentoring, and support
services to promote healthy marriage relationships. In
addition, job and career advancement support is provided to
targeted families to promote economic stability and selfsufficiency.
• Adult Basic Education/GED
 Family Centered Programs provides year round adult classes at
Emerson Family School and J. L. King Center. These classes
provide adult basic education, GED preparation, job readiness
training, and English as a Second Language preparation. Free
childcare is provided for parents while they attend classes. For GED

Emerson Preschool:
◦ Classes provide an environment that encourages children to
express themselves through language, art, movement, music,
dramatic play, and social interaction. There is also a strong
emphasis on literacy skills for 3-5 year olds.

Project CARE:
◦ Project that will provide child abuse and neglect prevention
services for 175 Oktibbeha County families through a 2-tiered
program focusing on parental educational and support services.

Reading to Succeed:
◦ Project that will address the literacy needs of Starkville School
District children, birth through 12th grade.

Safe Schools/Healthy Students:
◦ The Starkville School District's Safe Schools Healthy Students
Initiative is part of a nation-wide, unprecedented approach to
create safe schools for America's youth, free from violence and
substance use.

Counseling Crusade:
◦ Counseling Crusade Project is a recently funded 3-year project
that will enhance social and emotional development for
children enrolled in K-5 through additional counseling staff
and implementation of evidence-based programming.

Project Help:
◦ Project HELP provides assistance to children and youth who
are homeless as defined by McKinney-Vento Education for
Homeless Children and Youth to ensure they are enrolled in
schools and achieve academic success. Services include
assistance with meeting school enrollment requirements,
tutoring, and school supplies.

Extended Day:
◦ After school academic programs for students.



Resources for students and families who need help with
problems at home or at school.
Involves both students and parents.
Creates a sense of community.
