The Temperance Movement
America’s Alcohol Problem
Created by Mr. Steve Hauprich for acceleration and remediation of US History students.
The United States was founded
in part by
rum merchants
wine makers
whiskey distillers
beer brewers
ale brewers
tavern owners
snake oil hucksters
…and people of great character!!!
Notice the bottle of port wine on the table
in this picture of George Washington?
Note the differences in this picture…
after the temperance movement called.
A “drunkard’s progress”
was a common theme…
drunkenness would lead
to moral vice…
and ultimately self destruction.
The opposite of temperance is …
Drunkenness … or … intemperance …
Men … Fathers in particular
were identified as susceptible to …
falling off the wagon.
…
Drunken Dads
Were The
Great Threat
To American
Family
Stability.
Drunks
Were
Bad
Dancers
Shame!
Shame!!
Shame!!!
Women led the
noble crusade
against
alcohol
abuse in
America.
AA…mmenn.
These
Ladies
…can’t
think of
a good
reason
to drink…
…a very
sobering
thought…
eh….
American virtue and vice were
at issue in cultural war …
…eventually the 18th Amendment
would attempt to settle the issue
with prohibition.
