Overview
• MIH Function enables a mobile terminal to discover mobile terminal’s
network address related information before handover.
• Several address configuration methods are available for both IPv4
and IPv6 mobile terminal to configure its address.





Static IPv4 address manually
Dynamic IPv4 address configuration (using DHCPv4)
Stateless IPv6 address configuration (using RFC2461)
Stateful IPv6 address configuration (using DHCPv6)
etc...
• If the IP mobile terminal recognizes its address configuration method
before handover, it would be a useful information to prepare its
address configuration.




DHCP Discover for DHCPv4
RS/RA exchange for Stateless Auto-Configuration
DHCP Solicit for DHCPv6
No message for address configuration

IP Address Configuration
• IPv4 address can be typically configured by either
DHCPv4 or static method.

DHCPv4 is dominant method than static when in motion.
• IPv6 address can be configured by either stateless
method or stateful method.


Stateless method: RFC2461
Stateful method: RFC3315 (DHCPv6)
• IPv6 Prefix is not mandate for all router
• If no prefix


Don’t need to do a stateless configuration. (RS/RA exchange)
Rather, a mobile node should send a DHCPv6 DISCOVER
message to obtain its IPv6 address.
• Stateful IPv6 configuration regardless of prefix

Admin manageable IPv6 allocation
