Automatic Message Switching
System (AMSS)
• Assist in meeting the requirements of the
RTH
• The AMSS has the following capabilities
• Handles all kind of WMO data required by an NMC.
• Supports all kind of interfaces including:
- Asynchronous lines (leased line, dial-up) at any standard
speed
- Telegraphic lines
- TCP/IP FTP based communications
- TCP/IP socket based connections
- AFTN/ICAO interface
- Point-to-point X25 connections
- Automatic email, fax and printer connectivity
- RETIM 2000, MDD, MSG, SADIS, ISCS satellite
emission / reception
15
GTS SUPPORT FACILITES
To support GTS data distribution,
Nairobi has acquired and installed
Satellite based Stations to enhance
amount of data for distribution and
forecasting. These are:• MSG (Second Generation) which include
MDD data
• RANET
• RETIM-Africa station in Nairobi and
Mombasa.
16
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AT
THE RTH
• Breakdown of SSB radios for national
data collection and propagation
problems at night resulting to use of
telephones. (high cost…)
• Unreliability and high cost of the
national telecommunication system for
regional connections.
• Limited allocation from the National
budget to meet the needs for the
Departments.
17
WIGOS Demonstration project (WDP)
In preparation for the implementation of the WDP, Kenya has done the
following:
• Nominated three focal points for coordination of the WDP
• Formed a committee for the project implementation with the following terms
of reference.
 Take inventory of all the observational systems in KMD. These will
include land , sea, and upper air observations
 Consider stake holders who have environmental observational systems.
 Integrate data and products from all the observational systems in KMD
into one Information system taking into account the WMO
recommended data formats where applicable.
 Consider Data from stakeholders and integrate it into the Information
system.
18
WIGOS Demonstration
project (WDP)
 Develop a KMD Meteorological Information Processing System (MIPS)
 Develop a KMD meteorological Climatological Data Bank (MCDB) with a well defined
Meta data for push and pull of data into GTS.
 Consider the status of the existing GTS and make recommendations on its
improvements.
 Meet once a month to consider progress.
 Give a progress report every six months to the Director for forward transmission
to WMO.
 In the process of procuring a Integrated Meteorological
Information System (IMIS)
 Installed a sector specific meteorological products
generation system
