Router Basics
For Netplay
What’s it do?
• A Router takes the internet address from the
outside world (the one you would have
without a router plugged in) and then sends
the signal to other computers via an internal
network
• This network uses addresses that start with
192.168.1., and each computer in the network
has its own address by the last numbers (.100.
101, etc)

Addresses
• The address you give your opponent is the one
for the internet, usually a two digit number to
start, like 76. (You can look it up using a site like
www.ipchicken.com) The internal ip address is
the number that starts with 192. The key to this
whole babble is to port forward this internal ip
address for port 6501, tcp and udp.
• If you do not do this, you cannot host with your
router, plain and simple.
Addresses
External- give to opponent
• Not found on game, have to
look up, use
www.ipchicken.com or
www.whatsmyip.com or
similar sites.
Intenal IP- set up your router
• It is the 192,168.1.1xx
address shown when you
first go to host a game. Port
forward this exact address
only on your router for port
6501, tcp and udp.
That should be it…
Check Firewalls
• If you can’t host or join, you
either have a firewall issue
or a game issue (wrong
patch, using different lzps,
etc).
Check version of game
• Go to help, then about, and
it will show you the game
version, ask others if u don’t
know the current version
everyone is using.
Final Tips
Go slow on the buttons….
• Especially when doing
something that changes
control to your opponent,
should only have to wait a
second, but quick clicks can
cause freezes, especially if
you have other stuff going
on (email, ims, internet, etc)
Try to max bandwidth
• Limit other internet stuff
going on (AIM messages at
the wrong time can freeze
the game, imo)
• Check if game runs
smoother with certain other
items off (wireless printers,
xbox live, etc) that can
interfere with netplay.
Good Luck!
