EASY WIRELESS
Allow seamless roaming between wireless networks while
maintaining Quality of Service
VTT TECHNICAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF FINLAND
Easy Wireless goals
•
Allow service continuity with managed QoS and adaptive
service provisioning for mobile users in heterogeneous
networking environment
•
Strengthen the European expertise and competence in this
area of communications
•
Pave the way for the interoperability of different networks
supporting the transitioning to latest communication
technologies
VTT TECHNICAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF FINLAND
Technical background
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Different network technologies are converging in Europe
and globally
New technologies (hotspots, EDGE, 3G) allow higher data
rates enabling new services (VoD, peer-to-peer video,
videoconferencing, etc) in wireless networks
Multimedia services require guaranteed QoS with high
bandwidth and low latency
User acceptance for new services depends strongly on the
user experienced quality of the service.
Future services need to be available wirelessly
Services need to be trustworthy and easy to use
Service provisioning must meet the user expected quality
VTT TECHNICAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF FINLAND
Major results of Easy Wireless
•
Open architecture allowing to realise service continuity with managed
QoS in heterogeneous network environments
•
Demonstrators showing the feasibility and performance of the
proposed architecture and mechanisms
•
Contributions to networking and communications standards
•
Scientific publications
•
Increase interoperability between different technologies and improve
QoS capabilities in wireless protocols

Work of the Finnish sub-consortium
VTT
• Develop architecture to measure, test and control the end-to-end
QoS over heterogeneous networks (including cellular access
networks, IP core networks, and wireless hotspots)
• Qos measurements
• Co-operation of QoS mechanisms in different networks
• Congestion control, flow control and scheduling mechanisms
• QoS-aware transport protocols for multimedia communications
• Set up demonstration platform with selected network technologies in
order to show the performance and feasibility of the architecture
• Vertical handover between 3G and WLAN while maintaining QoS
• Real-tíme QoS measurement tool
• QoS measurements in cooperation with Nethawk
Nethawk
• QoS measurements and analysing methods

•
Provides access for real
WCDMA terminals to Core
network and Internet.
Enables easily the end-toend service testing in 3G
environment.
Makes optimisation and
enhancements of QoSmechanism in UTRAN and
Core network possible
without intruding upon

Funding already approved in Finland for VTT and Nethawk
Tekes –funding is 35-50% of the company’s total project costs
Next funding period: 1.7.2005 – 31.12.2006
Each partner is responsible for it’s own costs
Possibility to get extra funding for R&D work, when the topics
are in line with the project
International contacts
IPR can be protected
Standardization, the aim is to introduce project results to
standardization bodies
Gather latest knowledge in end-to-end QoS research
New partners are welcome to join the project any time
