Drop of traffic and revenues, force fixed network
operators to review their business strategic
The turn around of this situation, requires an
aggressive move towards Broadband and a new
service-oriented vision.

Network infraestructure must be fitted to
new business challenges and to do so
we’ll need to use new tecnologies.
However, PT has to maintain its legacy
networks so this change must be non
disruptive.
NGN Workshop - Brasilia

New services will be about:
Value added
Ease of use
Contents
Entertainement

8
What kind of network can support this
strategy?
Focus on services rather than connectivity
Flexibility and reduced time to market
A single structure that supports multiple
services
Potential for cost optimization

PSTN/ISDN Simulation/Emulation
IMS Sub-system (“Core IMS”) provides the SIP Supplementary Services (“PSTN/ISDN Simulation”)
PSTN/ISDN Emulation Sub-system (PES) supports the emulation of PSTN/ISDN services for legacy terminals
connected to NGN, through residential or access gateways.
PES is a relevant sub-system for Fixed
Operators because it allows:
• PSTN replacement
• Gradual migration
with minimum impact on the
subscriber side
• Easier migration of PSTN/ISDN
subscribers to native SIP
subscribers.

NGN/IMS Architecture - when and how to deploy?
Challenges/Issues
• User profiles in a central location
• Voice Call Continuity
• Regulation (Lawful Interception, Data Privacy, Emergency Calls, Number Portability, Bundling of
Services)
• Network security
• Resources optimization
• QoS for real time services
• OSS and BSS development/integration

Fixed – Mobile Convergence
Fixed Network:
•Higher Quality
•Low Cost
•Higher Bandwidth
Convergence
The Best of Two Worlds
•Mobile Network:
•Personalisation
•Mobility
•Handsets
FMC will provide several business benefits for integrated operators:
•
•
•
•
Improved customer retention and reduced marketing costs through reduced churn
Reduced network costs (Capex and Opex)
New revenues with converged services
Decrease churn rate offering a seamless user experience across all networks
NGN/IMS Architecture  “Key Enabler” for FMC
