Office Usage
Creation of many files is nowadays office work attribute and almost all
operation are now made or supported by computers. Because of the limited
mass storage disk space System Administrators very often use divided
architecture to manage files stored on many computers. Lots of user files
are placed on their own local drives what causes a huge problem: failure of
user’s HDD destroys all data stored on the drive – sometimes collected for
many years.
Our system manages all that problems, giving in the same time a new way
of the efficient disk space usage with high speed rate of data access. We
give You a huge data storage capacity in the price lower than a single disk
drive if counted per office employee. You get an opportunity to use the disk
space optimally: disk space is granted if needed and not limited by user’s
disks capacity. In addition all the data is stored in one place from where it
can be easy backup on a streamer (tape drives).

Multimedia Use
Thanks to its powerful performance and large storage
space, Home Storage is perfectly suited for saving large
video and music material in and uncompressed format
(RAW)
When archiving in Home Storage, access to the needed
data is almost instantaneous and its management is
extremely easy. By creating a cataloged structure and
including access rights, users can optimize the file
system to their needs. The flexibility of the device allows
the user almost limitless possibilities of arranging their
files and catalogs

Home Use
Because of the fact that the resources of the device can be used by
many home PC’s, its low noise level and the very fast access to
stored data, makes it perfectly suited as a central (archival) device
to be utilized by home users. It allows the users to have a complete
control over their files and clean up any mess that may exist with
their CDs, DVDs and other files stored on the disk drives.
With help of additional software creating a virtual CD/DVD drive we
can simulate a usage of a real Compact and DVD disc, with an
afford of just few mouse clicks. Advanced Technologies used on
Home Storage make our favorite photos, music, movies, …. safe and
endangered by CD/DVD scratches or a hard disk failure.

Network Use
Local and neighborhood networks are becoming more popular each year.
Such networks allow large numbers of users to communicate with each
other. Neighborhood networks provide users with cheap access to the
Internet, which is becoming a primary information and communication
vehicle.
Thanks to the use of the FTP protocol (File Transfer Protocol) our device is
perfectly suited as a storage repository for files downloaded by local
network customers. Additionally, this also relives some network traffic, as
users need only download file once; the files are then available for all users
in Home Storage. By using NFS or SMB, access to those files is as easy, as
they were on our local hard drives. The NFS (Network File System) protocol
allows to use the device as a mass storage for emails or as a proxy server
for web pages.

Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)
RAID is an assembly of two or more hard disks that are
employed in combination to increase data integrity, faulttolerance and/or performance.

RAID models
Stripping – spreads out blocks of each file across multiple disk
drives allowing a faster data access.
Mirroring – provides redundancy by writing same data to a two
drives. The performance tends to be faster on reads and slower on
writes compared to a single drive. If one drive fails, all of the data
is available on the other one.

RAID Levels
- Raid 0 – assembly of disks for greater efficiency capacity.
- Raid 1 – assembly of disks for greater security.
- Raid 5 – is a compromise between safety and redundancy
of the disk space .




LVM (Logical Volume Manager) allows to manage
the disk space on much higher level then
ordinary disks and partitions management
It connects tree levels (Physical Volumes,
Volumes Groups, Logical Volumes) comparing to
the classic, two level approach (disk and
partition).
Its varieties are used in Storage Devices
companies like IBM, HP or DELL.

Disadvantages
You cannot create partitions bigger then the
disk capacity.
You have to predict future needs of the
partitions.
You cannot redistribute a disk space between
partitions.
Disk exchange is quite problematic.

Advantages
 You can create volumes bigger then single drive capacity.
 You don’t have to predict the future disk usage (You can
increase volumes dynamically)
 You can redistribute free space between volumes (You can
shrink them dynamically)
 You can create and remove volumes ad hock.
 You can exchange the disks without any problems (You can
dynamically migrate date from one volume to another)

Network Protocols
- SMB is a protocol used in Microsoft Windows
operating systems. It allows any workstation with
Windows 95/98/2000/2003/XP... or Apple to
connect to storage resources
- NFS is a protocol used in Linux/Unix operating
systems
- FTP is an internet protocol that can be used on
any operating system (ftp client required).
