Age of Exploration: Explorers
Today’s Objectives
• Identify the early explorers, where they were
from, the route they took and their significance to
exploration.
• Explain how the process of exploration turns into
colonization.
• Explain the concept of mercantilism and how it
encouraged colonization.
The Explorers
• As we go through the notes complete the
following…
– Fill in your chart.
– Draw the route on your map.
Bartholomeu Dias
Portuguese explorer who explored Africa’s coast. He led the first
expedition to sail around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, but did not get to
India.
Christopher Columbus
Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492,
hoping to find a route to India—he sailed for Spain’s Queen
Isabella and King Ferdinand II. He “discovered” America.
Vasco da Gama
Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route from Portugal to
India around the Cape of Good Hope (Africa). This voyage gave Portugal a
direct route to India.
Amerigo Vespucci
Born in Italy in 1454, he was one of the first explorers to think that the
places he had visited were not part of Asia (as Columbus thought), but
rather a New World. He sailed for Portugal.
Treaty of Tordesillas
• A line that was agreed
upon by the Spanish
and Portuguese to
clear up any confusion

Colonies
• Europeans competed to
make money and get
glory.
• Europeans wanted
colonies for their
resources and as
markets to sell products.
• Colony = settlement
ruled by a parent
country.
Mercantilism
Mercantilism:
– Belief that wealth equals power
– Countries want colonies to get wealth
– Wealth is measured by gold and silver
– Colonies exist to serve parent country
– Spain takes a lot of gold (bullion) from the New
World.
