Optimizing Application Performance:
Within the Data Center and Beyond
There are many options for handling application flows between
the application server and the user. While much of the service
chain is focused on inspecting the pay load to make decisions
on packet handling, elements such as ADCs (Application
Delivery Controllers) and Wan Optimization Controllers
accelerate and optimize the delivery of application data.

My Friends
 Fabio Fiori recently joined Avaya in Fall 2013. Fabio has been in the IT
industry for over 25 years, most recently with Dell where he spent the last
16 years managing a Global team of Evangelists focused on Storage and
the Data Center.
 Dormain Drewitz - Riverbed's Director of Platform Product Marketing.
She joined Riverbed in 2011 after spending over 5 years as a technology
investment analyst, closely following IT software companies. She's written
and commented extensively on technology trends like cloud computing
and desktop virtualization. Dormain holds a B. A. in History from the
University of California at Los Angeles. Follow her on Twitter
@DormainDrewitz.
 Randy Cross is the Director of PLM for Fabric & Infrastructure Products
within Avaya Networking. He is responsible for defining the role of
networking in Cloud and DC applications for Avaya, as well as, developing
the strategic alliances necessary for end-to-end solutions.

A Few Business Challenges
 Complexity or Simplification
 Physical to Virtual Data Center Transition - Modernization
 Lack / Different Resources and Skills
 Different Skill sets required in the “Modern Day” Data Center
 Growth or Reductions
 Data Center Flexibility
 Velocity / Dynamic Data Center
 Distance
 Use of remote locations for augmented services
 Budgets
 $$$$$$$

5
Traditional IT - Physical
 Clients mapped to physical
Servers/Apps. Made it
easier to isolate
 Servers had 1 or a few apps
and were only being utilized
5 to 15 percent
 Ethernet Networks were
oversubscribed 3 to 1 ratio
to TOR and less than 5-10%
at each server port
 Storage varied FC SAN, or
IP based NAS or iSCSI

6
Mixed IT – Physical and Virtual
 Clients mapped to physical
Apps, but maybe not physical
server
 Combination of Physical and
Virtual Servers. Reduced
footprint, but Increased
Complexity
 Some Ethernet Networks were
oversubscribed 3 to 1 ratio to
TOR. Some servers ports still
running less than 5-10%,
others running closer to 80%
 Storage varied FC SAN, or IP
based NAS or iSCSI

Virtualized / Modernized IT





Pros
Eliminate the one to one Server to
Application
Decouple OS and Apps from
Physical Servers with use of a Virtual
Machines
Allows for easier mobility of
Applications
Maximizing all assets
Reduces Capex and Opex
Cons
 Not everyone is fully Virtualized.
Mixed mode still adds complexity
 Depending on implementation or
virtualization, managing Apps could
still be complex
 Higher demand on overall Network,
due to movement of Apps and Data

Example - Microsoft Storage Spaces
Storage Spaces gives administrators the option to deploy a resilient and highly available
storage system utilizing cost-efficient hardware – commodity SAS JBOD (Just a Bunch Of

Thoughts
Fundamental shift in the industry from Traditional Data Centers to Virtualized /
Modernized / Cloud Based Data Centers
 The Journey



What Will Your Timing Look Like? Or will you even embark on the Journey?
Do Know What Your End Goal is?
The Journey Doesn’t Need To Be an All Or Nothing Approach
 Flexibility and Scalability needs to be easy and efficient within every tier of your
data center and beyond
 For large Global companies, Localization and data distribution have enormous
values in meeting customer experience
 Node based technologies in the Data Center will require robust Networks and
Smart Apps
 Information and Data hold tremendous value and need to be cherished
 You need tools to help manage the evolution of today’s requirements and
provide your organizations Deterministic SLA’s for Customer experience

Application performance must be
architected in – afterthoughts are too
late…

service and a good end-user experience.”

Application performance requires
complete visibility – users should not
be canaries…
“We had low user satisfaction because we waited
for users to contact the help desk when they had a
phone or video problem.”

18
Application performance must
overcome latency – the business
cannot be constrained by location…
“Getting contracts approved is a time-consuming
process that involves pushing large amounts of data
to our central office in Orlando... Since it wasn’t
possible to duplicate our main business systems
and processes in our Japanese offices, it was
taking up to 30 minutes to complete the IT portion
of the contracts process.”
